Safe email account to use? What do yall recommend?

Proton mail sent me a message saying I would receive a notification when a spot becomes available...has anyone registered and had to wait? If so, about how long. Thinking of just rolling with Tutanota but I've seen reviews that Proton is more secure. Guess it's time to do more reading

That's normal. Wait time was around 2 months for me.

Use the email your source uses.
Absolutely
Brilliant!
By doing so the Email won't transit the Internet where it can be intercepted. It just stays within their servers
And to access it use a prepaid phone or tablet paid cash with a fictitious name invoice.

I use tutanota. I feel it is more secure.

So I come across this thread yesterday and everyone got me all fired up about a tutanota account. So I get my account and go to send my first email and the only way to send anything confidential is set up an agreed upon password from both ends. How does that work for ordering gear online? Do you all usually just do the thing where you send the confidential password encrypted email followed by a not confidential email with the password in it? Are most sources ok with that?

And I just got a protonmail account because you all made it aound like that was the shit and there was a 2 month waitlist. I simply went online and got an account with no wait period? What am I missing? Is there some underground protonmail I dont know about....

And what's the deal with having to enter two passwords every time I login to protonmail? First I login with userid and then I have to enter second password to "decrypt" email. Is there a way to simply just log directly to email?

Is anyone still subscribed to this thread or did you all get arrested?

Is everyone still using proton mail

Damn bro Im way late on this one. All you have to do is select the option to send it unconfidential. It fucks with me sometimes an ends up sending it confidential...I then get pissed an use a diff email provider lol

Proton mail is free and encrypted!

No, no underground Protonmail (unless you're referring to their server location, in a former Swiss nuclear bunker). They opened-up registration some time ago.

You do realize that all your email is PGP-encrypted, don't you? When you setup an account, the service generated a PGP-keypair for you. All incoming email is encrypted with your PGP key.

Is there a way to simply just log directly to email?

No. The "mailbox key" is your passphrase used to unlock your PGP private key, so your email can be decrypted. Protonmail differs from Hushmail in that Protonmail asks for the passphrase up-front, instead of asking for it, when you go to decrypt your email.

Hopefully nobody got arrested.

For those using tutanota are you sending encrypted or not? How are you getting receiver the password if sending encrypted?

You are confusing private "shared secret" encryption with what tutanota uses which is Public Key Cryptography.

No, they don't need your password. The password is your private key and is used to digitally hash the message digest.

the message is encrypted using the recipient's public key (which tutanota has) and *decrypted* using using their private key (their password).

Do NOT ever give anyone your password since your exclusive knowledge of this key is the ONLY thing keeping your shit private.

Read up on how this works before doing anything you need kept private with it.

If you ever have given your password out to anyone you have compromised your private key and nothing you sent using it can be relied on to stay secure after that point. Don't do that.
I know these quotes are old but I believe the link you posted sort of proved this first question to be correct. I don't know much about any of this but by reading the link posted it seems that you do need to have an agreed upon password between sender and receiver if you want to send encrypted from tutanota to a non tutanota account. If that is correct then are emails not encrypted at all if it isn't a tutanota to tutanota email?

Good question. Ive always wondered this myself. If I were a bettin man I would say it wouldn't be encrypted unless their was that password involved.
