Making the switch to powerlifting, Gobuckeyes 2017 log

Hmmm, so when I took that week off before my meet and set PRs across the board, that was my imagination lol?
Yep you must having been dreaming. Lol

Did you attempt those PRs the week before your week off? My bet is that if you would have deloaded instead of taking that week off you would have been able to add another 2.5 to each side.

How often are you guys attempting 1rm anyways? Should be every week. I’m not talking squat suits and wraps every week. Doesn’t even have to be a competition lift. Just has to be something to tell your body that you need these muscles and they shouldn’t be used as energy when it is in a nutrient fasting state.

I was thinking the same thing doc! I didn't pull for 14 days before my meet and ripped a pr like it was 135

Good shit man. Love max pulls that have speed to 'em

No. Weeks prior i worked towards heavy doubles and triples to fine tune my openers.

What do you think the week off was? It was deloading for the meet.

I don't do west side method so I infrequently work up to a 1RM. I would rather build strength then constantly test it.

Intensities below 100% do a perfectly fine job at muscle preservation but who's talking about nutrient fasted state???? I know I'm not lol. I love my food too much for that shit unless I'm tryin to make weight.

I attempt 1RMs about twice a year.

x2

Yea I was just thinking that most powerlifters don’t need to worry about a nutrient fasted state. Lol

Testing strength is also building strength in my opinion, else WS Protocol lifters wouldn’t ever get stronger.

If your method works for you, that’s great! Carry on my brothers.

I don't know a ton about their methods, but it's not truly a 1RM comp lift every week, is it? I thought it was more max effort every week and they rotate variations of the main lifts often to keep from burning out. Like max effort bench with chains for a week or a few weeks and then max effort board press for the next 1-3 weeks and so on.

Ii don't know much about it either! I ve maxed out once since getting back in the gym 18 months ago and that was in a meet! I like to push myself in the 3-5 rep range and I'm good with that!

I've never had Westwood carryover that well to raw lifters. It works great for geared lifters but then you also have to consider the fact that Louie only accepts the genetic elite so he's working from an already talented pool. Either way, I respect his method but it's just not for me. If you've gotten good results off of it my hat is off to you. I respect anyone who sets foot on the platform, even if we have different training philosophies.

You almost never use the comp lift from what I know. For bench for example you would do CGBP, 2 board press, 3 board press, dips, floor press, etc etc as your ME lift.

No you only max your comp lifts out in comp with WS. You don’t even squat without a box unless at comps. I change my main movements up every 3 weeks which could just mean a change in grip or stance.

You can follow WS routines if you are a raw lifter. The only time you need to use bands and chains is when addressing a weak point in your lift such as lockout. Bands and chains replicate using gear so if you don’t plan to use gear, just train how you compete. The main objective with the conjugate method is that you 1rm upper and lower body once a week and recover with speed work. This prevents overtraining and getting the max strength out of your week.

Sure there are plenty of methods that will get you strong. Hell.. you are going to get stronger repping out 135 every week. You just have to find the right bang for your buck. I grew up lifting with guys that trained with Louis in the early 90s before anyone knew what a reverse hyper, good morning, and band work was. It worked for me when I was young and it’s working now as an old man that started over. 3 months in, and my main movements continue to go up 5-10# a week.

I don’t compete nor plan on doing it in the future. I will still use bands and chains as well as do floor presses to keep the muscle confusion up. There’s only so many variations of the lifts you can do when you train by yourself and I’ll be damned if I ever try to put on a squat suit let alone knee wraps by myself. I’m not looking to set any records. I just want to be as strong as I can and be as much of a trophy husband as I can be. lol

Blah blah workout today. My back was hurting when I got up this morning and deadlifting didn't help it. Was suppose to do 3x5 445 but ended up doing 3x3. Was suppose to do good mornings also but skipped them and did other shit. Hopefully my 2nd week back from vacation is better than this week.

Last night was the worse sleep I've ever had. I decided to drink some with my wife, and I woke up 6 times with my legs cramping up bc I was dehydrated. Fuck that, worse pain I've felt in awhile.

Squatted Monday, worked up 3x3 435. Took Tuesday off bc I didn’t get enough sleep and benched today. Worked up 3x3 325, it felt good too. Didn’t pause long enough on a couple reps but for the most part I did ok. I’m feeling strong as fuck now, weight is up to 230. Only thing I don’t like is I feel bloated all the time. Not sure if it’s the high test, tren, or EQ that’s making me feel this way. Getting my motivation back now. It was gone after vacation.

Overhead presses 215 for 3x3 on Friday and deadlifted 470 2x3 Thursday. Was suppose to be 3x3 but fuck I didn’t have it in me. My back was hurting before I even got to the gym. One thing I’ve noticed since looking straight ahead while squatting is I stay tighter and can get lower. I squat again on Monday and I’m trying for a PR of 450. We will see how I feel if I go for it. If not I’ll work on form with lighter weight. On a different note, I’ve found a powerlifting gym that I’m thinking about switching to. I can actually get a free membership if I can hit certain weights. 10 reps of 150lbs dumbbell press. 1 rep 2x bodyweight bench or 500lbs, which ever is less. And 3x body weight squat or 650, which ever is less. There are more goals but they don’t apply to me, more runner shit and CrossFit shit. I think I can hit the bench goal late next year. If I drop my body weight to 200, I only have to bench 400. Right now I’m pretty sure I can hit 375, but at a body weight of 230. So I’ll have to cut without losing to much strength
