No not illegal at all. Where did you hear that? That smith&wesson is exceptional quality. The large frame is capable of holding the gun together even with the large ballistics. Mainly used for bear and larger game. Quite impractical for self defense. And yes always use 2 hands. Only wanna be gangsters use 1 hand. Sweet .. I built that exact rifle once using all blemished parts from jse surplus out of kcmo.... cost me 450 bucks and you cluldnt see a fucking blemish if you wanted to....
