The difference is in how each side handles the atrocity. I've seen parts of the Russian POW video and it appears that one of the surrendering troops started firing, or at least they thought so. I'm sure there will be an investigation.
But when you put 20,000 murderers, rapists and robbers from Russian prisons into uniform for a mercenary outfit not subject to the Geneva Convention, with an owner the Russian President is even scared of, and have them start waging war without any consequences that's a bit different than anything we've seen in the last century. You don't want to be a teenage girl in a town they capture.
There's an intercepted phone call here from a russian soldier who says his combat unit had 96 soldiers, after the ukrainians attacked they are down to less than 50 which is usually when you retreat, but they sent in the Wagner Group and he's surrounded by convicts now. So the Chechens, led by Kadyrov, are former militants and terrorists who killed, cut their heads. And now they are howling in Ukraine, taking revenge for the Chechen company, or am I wrong?
