US troops asking John Kerry for help.

Yeah they did that in response to Kerry popping off that, "if you don't get an education, you get stuck in Iraq."

Did you not hear about that?

Thats some funny shit there....

Lol i think his exact words to students were."Stay in school and get a degree or you might end up going to iraq." Lets face it the troops do have a pretty shitty job. They have benefits and might get a medal one day but other than that its a tough life.I know im not man enough to go something that needs that kind of dedication. If anything i think these guys should be getting paid a little bit more.

Yeah, they sometimes have a shitty job, but 1) they volunteered for it, and 2) Kerry wasnt talking about the working conditions. Kerry has a history of saying negative things about our military, so his most recent comment isnt much of a surprise.

He said that dummies go to Iraq. Real dummies went to Vietnam....Mr Kerry and his stellar 2.0 gpa from Yale.

He's right. I'd bet a good 95+% of the military are there because they are straight from HS and can't do anything else. Hell, I've been contemplating enlisting and that's because my education ain't doing shit, so I may as well kill people for a living. Sounds like fun to me.

It sad but it is true. No kid with a college scholarship or great future ahead decides to sign up for the military.

Only that retarded asshole Pat Tillman. "Oh, but he died for his country. He did a great service for his country. He sacrificed himself for his country" Fuck Kennedy! What has my country ever did for me? THAT is the question!

Yeah, it's admirable that he felt compelled to uphold VIRTUES, but don't attribute that to him serving his country, which is corrupt and implies that he's our collective bitch.

Oh yeah, and Charlie Sheen dropped out of college to serve in Vietnam in "Platoon", too, so that's two people. :p

i personally have nothing against joining the military but it has a really shitty Pros and Cons lists according to most things we can do careerwise.

I mean lets say you want to become a doctor. The pros are great money usually and a career where you know you are helping people. On the con side med school isnt easy and the gigantic student loans most people would have to take are something to consider.

With these military guys only thing they really have going for them is their benefits and MAYBE they might get a medal oneday. On the downside REALLY crappy money, long trips away from home so you might as well forget about getting in a serious relationship or spending time with your family.Yeah the chance of coming back in a bodybag is kinda high too if you happen to be in Iraq.

Personally i really dont think its worth it.If anything the US government is seeing all time lows when it comes to recruiting. If they increased the pay a bit more people might consider joining.

Don't forget full pension after 20 years. So, at age 38, those who are smart enough to stay are making 40K to sit on their asses, if they choose. they also get preferential treatment AND seniority in ALL branches of civil service. All in all, not a bad gig.

Yes but many dont stay in it long enough to get all that.I have talked to a lot of former soldiers and for some reason most of them seem to say they wouldnt do it again if they had the chance. They usually say yes its good to do something for your country and proudly tell people about it but the initial enthusiam wears off pretty fast when you away from home all the time and lack of pussy etc etc.

You guys talk about the "military" as though it were only one institution. There are many branches and many capacities that one could elect to serve in. Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, Coast Gaurd, National Gaurd all offer a huge variance in career opportunites. And with a college education, Grizz, you could enter as an officer, so long as you are still within the age requirements depending on branch; and start out making well over 50k with practically free insurance. And additionally, 1/2 to 2/3 of your total pay in the military is tax free!
I don't know a single officer in the Air Force, who stayed the full 20yrs, that wasn't making over 100k before they retired...

Vans right, I'm military and there are lots of College educated peeps involved. For one the Military pays there College bills if they continue in College so its a great way to go for kids leaving HS that want colledge but can't afford it. It definatly is a diffrent life style but once you get passed the bullshit its pretty good. hell I joined when I was 29, the shitty part was I out performed everyone in my basic training exept the 33 year guy.... Fucking fat kids these days...

I was roommates in college, and had many friends there, that were in ROTC and now serving in the Army. The majority of them are middle/upper-middle class from good families. My roommates' parents were corporate executives. A good friend of mine joined the Navy out of high school. Very smart girl and ended up working in intelligence/spying. After 8 years and getting married to another intelligence person, they both decided to leave the service. I believe they are now working for the CIA or other such organizations.

So to say that no one with a good future joins the military is an absolutely false statement. What about all those hopeless people that happened to get into West Point, Annapolis, or CO Springs? Three of the most selective schools in the world - more difficult to be accepted at than Harvard or Princeton. I guess they must all be dead-end dummies.

Ok, so it's 30k. What's the difference? Yeah, yeah, it's 10k, I know, but in the end, is it really a big difference? 26 years to go until retirement and you're banking 30k for doing shit. You can work at a grocery store and have a decent life.

Looked into that. They ain't looking for English/Philosophy majors. ;) While still in college, a buddy of mine was trying to get into the Marines as an officer, but his slightly marred criminal background(which is similar to mine) prohibited him from being able to join/become an officer.

Yeah, you only get one or two "head punching" violations before they won't let you in. Oh well.

I think it was a DUI which precluded him from officer school. Technically, I don't think I have any convictions on my record, but I have several charges.

Sort of strange that a tendency towards violence would make them uninterested in someone. I guess that's why they say "Military Intelligence" is an oxymoron.

OK maybe i didn't come out the way i wanted it. There are careers like you stated that military experience would further it. Or people actually seeking a military career. But I would say a large majority are people with out a planned future. I do understand that there are many smart people who have a planned future that includes the military
