Question for SWALE about Phosphatidylserine

Hey SWALE, in your opinion, is it possible that PS is TOO effective at reducing cortisol levels? It seems that every time I take it, I get some kind of "itus", either in my shoulder or my elbows. The first couple of times I took it at 1100mg/day, and my AC joint would flare up, which in turn, I would have to go and get a shot of cortisol. Now I just started taking it again, but only at 550mg/day, and now my other shoulder is flaring up. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but these "itus" type pains only come up when I take PS.

What do you think, am I crazy or what?

Obviously I am not SWALE, but I have high cortisol levels and taking PS has helped to lower it. Thing is, I have my cortisol monitored when I have my other labs done (e.g. test, free test, estrodiol).

I have read somewhere...I believe it was on meso, but can't find it now...that if your drive your cortisol levels too low your joints will ache.

I also have been told that taking more than 300mg/day has been linked to issues with mental function. That is pretty ironic, because improving mental function was one of the positive benefits of PS. I guess that just goes to show that "everything in moderation" is pretty good motto.

At one point, I was also taking 1100mg/day because that is what the bottle's suggested dosage was. Thing is...the manufacturer doesn't take a person's current cortisol levels into account when the recomend that dosage. Let alone the fact that it could be harmful.

Hope this helps.

Smitty is right on the money here.

PS is extremely effective for lowering cortisol levels. However, you must have a lab test to show you have elevated cortisol in the first place. In fact, I have patients who I have supplemented glucocorticoids (the class of hormones cortisol belongs to) because of demonstrated deficiency. That is also why this popular diet aid that has recently come out really scares me--taking it could damage the health of anyone who uses it should they actually be low to start with.

Who suffers "adrenal burnout"? Well, how about doctors who live with years of nonstop stress--I take 20mg per day of hydrocortisone, and it made a world of difference in my life. I beef it up a bit when I am feeling illness coming on, and have been able to abort three colds this season that way.

A bodybuilder looking to qualify for his Pro Card reently asked me for a medication which would lower his cortisol. We had to have a talk about why he definitely should not use it.

BTW, 300mg of PS per day is plenty.
