FTW...i've been practicing my tree climbing skills :) . i'll be armed with a Marlin 45-70 and either a ruger vaquero in 45 colt with hot handloads, or just my kimber 45. i'll be in the wilderness alone this time around, so i figure i better go as prepared as possible. last time my buddy was with me, and armed as well. 2 against 1 is better than Joe vs the Grizzly :) .

thanks for all the advice gentlemen.

have a nice day

first off i want to say hello to all cause its been a long time since i been around.now thats out of the way.
joe, you say your going into griz. country?you have got plenty of knife advise, but sounds like you need griz advise!leave the .45 auto at home!shooting a large bear with that is about like shootin a crack head with a bb gun.youll just piss him off real bad,and those things have bad additudes anyway. .45 colt is a better option, but id opt for 44mag or 454 with heavy soft pionts.colt will be just fine in a pinch as long as you arent you hp bullets.remember that a bears vitals are further back in the chest cavity than say, a whitetails or elk,so this means on a chest shot youll have to have some serious penetration.45-70 is on the other hand is great medicine for bear at close range.youll more than likely not encounter this problem, but its good to know if you are unluckly enough to.also if you do clim a tree (i wouldnt) but if you do make sure it small enough that he cant climb it,but big enough he cant push it over!
btw your right about kimber they are sweet 1911's also para's are good, and a little cheaper.i love colts though just cant find them anymore.piss on sig over rated and over priced!
hope that helps you.have fun and for Gods sake be careful!
sorry so long

i thought u said u had a gerbel that is well trained

as for knives. cutco is very good. lifetime warrant. i get the serrated edge. Will clean 8-10 deer(field dress, skin, and cut up) b4 it needs sharpened. than u can send it in for like 3 bucks and they will sharpen it. now my friends, brother and dad all have one so for 7 dollars total we can send all of our knives in at once.

when i saw your thread i immediatly thought of a k-bar, great knife and not to expensive,,, who said leatherman? i would bring one of the those along without hesitation - its a great tool..

buck, oldtimer all good knifes - i also have gerber thats not to bad either..

maxx...the only reason i was thinking about bringing the kimber 45acp was due to coyotes(not such a big worry though) and having read that the transplanted wolves are adapting VERY well and spreading out. so the kimber was going to be for protection against them. my vaquero in 45 colt, with handloads, outperforms a 44mag. 300grain bullet at about 1250fps. and yes, the 45-70 is more than enough for bear. and i would only resort to it if the bear got too close for comfort. i guess my old boyscout days are coming back to me...always be prepared :) .

i had a well trained gerbil once. i looked every where but cant find him :( .

have a nice day

hell joe id just takem all :D btw why are you going by yourself?

aw shit joe, quit screwing around and go get one of these. at 72 ounces it takes a bodybuilder to hold it http://swfirearms.vista.com/store/index.php3?cat=293531&sw_activeTab=1

maxx...going alone as kind of a challenge to myself. being about 40 miles away from a paved road, no cell phone reception, no help. basically, just me relying on myself. hell, the cowboys used to do it all the time. my buddy will meet me out there a few days later. so it'll be me, my horse, a pack horse, and my wits/skills in the wide open wilderness for a few days.

krom...no thanks on the 500. my friend has a desert eagle in 50AE. i dont like shooting that thing at all!! and to lift the damn thing, i think i'd need a couple more cycles :) .
have a nice day
