MP's Meet Training Log 3rd Edition

Not me brother. I don't have time for injuries. If i feel like i am injured then i'm screwing off until i can get it healed up. I don't have time to be getting seriously injured and taking a month off of a lift. I would rather blow something off or cruise until it gets better. I'm in it for the long haul, not pulling a door off a burning car with children inside. If that was the case then i would risk the injury and give it a go, but short of that i'm going to err on the side of caution most times.

That is the right answer. Sometimes I'm not particularly smart and push it harder than I should. Sometimes I've gotten lucky and other times I've been bitten in the ass.

5/27
Close Grip Bench 10x185, 8x225, 6x265, 4x305, 8x225
Slow and controlled reps testing the bicep tendon which felt ok.

5/28
2" block pulls 3x315, 2x375, 1x425, 1x475, 0x525
pull ups 3x10
low pulley rows 3x8 230
pull throughs 3x10 140

Was supposed to work up to 560 on the block pulls. 475 felt heavy and 525 didn't budge, Tried it again, same result.

Took care of some other business and was so pissed off with this morning's result I said fuck it and decided to pull again from the floor and see what happened this afternoon.

deads 2x325, 1x375, 1x425, 1x475, 1x525

525 moved pretty well and there was a bit more there but that was enough as I got some confidence back. I'm simply terrible at block and rack pulls. I'm sure that indicates a weakness and you guys and girls can weigh in as to what it is so I can work on it following meet training.

Can't be much help there. I suck so bad at rack pulls. I just stick with the main lift and vary my intensity as i can. Sometimes i feel like the extra work is just goofy shit and goes against the k.i.s.s. principle. To those guys it helps - no offense, whatever works for you. Results are always better than theories. I work so hard to keep my deadlift fluid that breaking it into pieces seems to go against principle a bit.

As to why you had a bad day...fucking magic. I can't make heads or tails of deadlift for so many reasons. I feel like i'm going to kill it, mediocre day at best. I'm not feeling all that good, probably set a p.r. Did 535 for 5 and had shit left on the table so the next week i should move it up and destroy it, or i could pull 475 for 1 and be lucky to get that(yes that was this week). If there is a pattern to this i am not seeing it other than i need to alternate balls to the walls week and twiddling my thumbs week.

I'm only doing the block pulls because it is part of the program I'm running. I think I'm better off incorporating chains and bands and sticking to pulling off the floor or from a slight deficit.

535x5 is nice by the way!!

The slight deficit thing i like. Make it a bit harder. Same with the chains. Block pulls i just don't get. I honestly can't do any more with a rack pull from my knees than i can from the floor, maybe less. To me it feels like someone handing me the bench at the bottom and yelling "Go". I'm not loaded and coiling the spring up again at the halfway point is odd.

I was always stronger on rack pulls. I did them from 1inch above the knee. Now when I was doing block deadlifts. I was weaker. I would use 2inch aerobics step. And would use just 25 lb plates to give even more deficit. Could never get over 350lbs but on rack pulls could do over 500. My start was the problem with deadlifts. I am enjoying your log @Masters Power

I prefer chains to block/rack pulls as well. Block and rack pulls feel very unnatural to me.

As far as what the weak point is for being weak on rack/block pulls I'd assume lower back and maybe glutes? Legs are pretty much out of the equation on them. I'm not sure really.

Thanks guys. Making me feel a lot better that I'm not the only one. I'm an explosive puller and I think devildog hit my issue. By the time the bar is at the spot I'm starting a block pull I already have some speed going from the floor. I will add in some band pulls in place of the rack pulls the next training cycle.

5/29
paused bench 5x185, 3x235, 2x285, 1x335, 1x365, 1x395, 2x2 345
face pulls 3x10 100
side laterals 3x10 40

First benching in a week went pretty well. 395 moved easier than it did last Sunday. No bicep tendon issues. Will take a run at moving up bench to at least 405 over the next two weeks using the Bulgarian method into the meet.

My best pull from the floor is higher than my best rack/block pull. I'm sure I could pull slightly more from them, but I wouldn't waste going that heavy on them. If I'm pulling max weight I'm pulling it from the floor.

So, MP, are you considering these singles as your daily training max? Like the 395, I mean? I've read Squat Every Day and I'm familiar with the philosophy. If you hit 405 as a true daily max I'd think you'd be good for around 425 in meet circumstances.

Sorry to hear about your dog, MP. I've lost pets after much shorter times and been devastated, after that long must be like losing a family member.

Only getting to run it for 2 weeks I will be much closer to actual max each day than running it for 8 weeks using training max. I'm hoping to go a little higher meet day than I get to in training but it won't be 20 pounds this time around.

5/30
paused bench 5x135, 5x185, 3x235, 2x285, 1x325, 1x365, 1x395
tate press 3x10 40
tricep pressdowns 3x10 90
barbell curls 12x85 10x95, 105 8x115

Came back at 395 today as I wasn't that happy with the speed on it yesterday. Slightly better today.

Thanks Perrin. Yes she was definitely a family member. My son is 13 and she preceded him by many years.

Guess i missed the post about your pup but you have my condolences. Dogs are absolutely a member of the family. However, it sounds like she had a good long life, thats what really helped me when my 15 year old.pit died, just knowing that he had lots of good times. Lots of walks, plenty of treats, and a ton of love from the family. Thats what matters :)

Thanks insaiyan. The post was in someone else's thread mentioning their elderly dog having some health issues. She definitely had a good life.

I have a couple of friends with Pit's both are great dogs. One is a female who lives alone and the first time I showed up I thought this might not be good but she came right up to me and we were fast friends. It was that way every time I came over after that. Pits seem to have a pretty good idea which people are dog people and which aren't.
