Making the switch to powerlifting, Gobuckeyes 2017 log

Yoga was fun. A lot of stretching and breathing which I think could actually help my powerlifting. I bought one of those scales that tell you your body fat also. I know I read that they r not accurate but I figured it might be close. Fuck that!!!! It said I'm 29% body fat. How the fuck. I was 26% last October when I weighed 250, I weighed 221 today and you can start to see my abs. Fucking rip off.

Well I squatted today and worked up to 3x1 395. But I also did yoga again yesterday and my wife signed us up for a level 1-2 class instead of beginner. My legs definitely didn't feel fresh, I still managed to hit all my reps tho.
I'm going to do this yoga thing for a month with my wife, so I'll have to figure out timing for it so it doesn't interfere with my lifting. On a brighter note, I video taped myself and my squats looked good. I hit depth, remembered all my cues.

I need to get into yoga. I hear hot yoga is the shit. Nice work on that 395.

Yea my wife wants to do hot and aerial yoga. I don't know about hot, it's hot enough in the regular classs. I could definitely stretch further this morning after just 2 classes tho.
I have to do the yoga thing. As I get older I need more flexibility. Yoga will definitely help. What is aerial yoga? Sounds like you will be suspended in air.

Yoga, in particular Bikram and Vinyasa styles, are fucking awesome for hip and overall mobility. I don't recommend doing a class before a lift, but after is fine and they're prefect for rest/recovery days.

What about shoulder mobility?

Absolutely helps w shoulders as well... I'm aware of your lifts, and I'm 1000% confident that you would benefit from 1 or 2 yoga classes a week... Back when I was at my strongest, my issues were with hips/lower back mobility and also general recovery time after 90% squats and Deads. Once I started doing yoga on the day after heavy Deads my recovery time improved like a mother fucker and my hips opened up more too. You should absolutely give it a try.

From what I've seen, it's great for shoulder mobility also. It's great for all around mobility. They got some wicked hard poises tho. I couldn't get into all of them bc my hips didn't bend that far lol.

Thanks. My hips are pretty mobile. My shoulder mobility is killing me though. My former coach saw my most recent squat and said it's preventing me from keeping my chest up. Plus I can barely grip the bar and it also hurts at times. I'll have to see if my gym offers it. They have a whole section for classes I've never been in.

Word... Might also want to checkout a book called "younger next year" it's about stretching and pre/re-hab for injuries/surgeries and improving overall flexibility and mobility. My dad had a total knee replacement last fall and his Ortho told him about the book. He said the stretches have been a big ass help..

I'm on cloud 9 right now. I just killed paused bench. I'm so proud of myself, my form was awesome, I got good leg drive without pushing my ass up, the bar path was correct, and no pain in my elbows. I worked up 3x1 at 280 but I actually did 3 reps on my last set. I've bench more than this before but it was touch n go. I've never paused benched this much.

On a separate note, my wife asked for a pad for the bar for squats. I blurted out, a pussy pad, she just looked at me like she wanted to kill me lol

Forgot to add this earlier. I'm going to eat at maintenance this week or a little above bc I've been in a deficit for about 10 weeks I think. Then next week I'll go back into a deficit. I just read it's good to do this every 10-12 weeks so your body doesn't adapt to the deficit.

You kinda are. There is like a rope thing hanging from the ceiling and you use that to do stuff with lol.

If this is what I'm thinking it is, do it. My massage/ART therapist has been tryin to get me to take a class. After our appointment if she has time she runs me through a few of the movements they do in the class.

It's very very similar to Donnie Thompsons lower back protocol which you can find on YouTube.
I did two yoga classes, one being hot, and really liked them a lot. Finding the time to do a class or two a week is the tough part

Cool, yea my wife wants to do one thru the week but I only have time on the weekend to do one. I'm still not sure about the hot class tho, why do I wanna sit there and sweat my ass off doing yoga? Is there more therapeutic use for the hot class? I'm going to stick with doing them for a couple months and see if it helps.
