Instinctive dieting

Anyone diet without counting calories/macros? If so, how do you go about it? It's easy to do when bulking but how about when dieting down to get shredded? I have heard that many bodybuilders back in the 90's and earlier never counted shit and still got shredded eating instinctively and doing cardio. Granted they were on a boatload of gear but so are a lot of us lol. Would like to hear all of your experiences!

I break down my macros and meals on FitDay. Stick by it religiously for a month and then adjust by how you feel and look. I have been on cycle for five weeks and still haven’t stepped on a scale.

if you not trying to compete and if your not getting paid. Then this method will work just fine. Or you can be that guy that weighs everything out and does meal prep a week at a time. if this makes you happy and gives you discipline knock yourself out! Though Imo it’s overkill for the recreational bodybuilder.

I am competing next summer. From a discussion with Lee Priest, he advised that going into a prep, just eat clean and sensibly throughout the day. Taper up cardio progressively every week in minor increments and let the cardio, fat burners, and gear do their thing. He said just eat every two to three hours, carbs around the workout with maybe one more carb meal during mid day if you feel like you need it and minimal added fats, just lean sources of protein. What do you guys think about that?

I think once you know the macros of the typical food and amounts you eat around your maintenance you can do it. Some guys seem to be able to eye food amounts and just know, otherwise you might still need to weigh some things out but not necessarily have to log every single thing. Works better when your diet is stapled to just a few foods vs. everything under the sun.
