Dropping Dumbbells - need opinion

Hey HeavyLiftr

Hey HeavyLiftr,

Which gym are you working out at in the city? My three guesses are:

1) NYSC
2) Crunch
3) Dolphin
4) Bally's

Ok...which one is it??? LOL

The prissy gyms are more likely to handle "dumbell throwing" moreso, than say a REAL gym like Gold's. Sure, when I lived in NYC I liked Crunch because it was close to my job and I was cool with all the trainers, but it just isn't condusive to hardcore lifting, so they get scared if people "drop weights too hard".

I was warned for "dropping the dumbells" when doing shoulder presses with 100 pound dumbells at a campus rec center the first year it was opened. Lil assholes tried running policy at me, a graduate of the school. I told the guy to fuck off.

LOL! I was tempted to do that bro, but since it happened twice in a week I was a bit more cautious... But I refined my technique by using the "legs up" method... looks stupid but at least no one is bugging me - yet. I'm sure they'll have a problem with that.

Regarding which gym: It's actually none of the above. It's a local gym located in Brooklyn that has some great equipment, a wide floor space, and three squat racks... Three squat racks and they have problems dropping bells.

Then again, people usually do some strange sh!t on the squat racks: Curls, these wonderful partial deads which look more like shrugs... shrugs with 2 plates on each side.. ughhh...

Not my first choice in terms of best gym to work out at, but it's not far from me, so... Gotta make due.

This saleswoman strikes me as being a newbe to the game. Give her time. But there is no need to alter your style--just don't dent the floor. LOL

We have some dumbell throwers in our gym, and now they are bent. While I'm not against dropping the weights from a short distance, I cannot stand when these idiots throw the stinkin things.

The best way I've found to handle the heavies when my set is up is to actually use the weight to sit myself upright.

After your last rep turn your palms so they're facing each other, bring your knees up and in one motion (almost like a rocking motion) put the dumbells on your thigh's/knees, and let the weight's momentum sit you upright.

Now it's a different story if your going to failure and don't have a spotter, but other than that, if you use this method, you shouldn't have to drop the weights at all.

Hope this makes sense,

I was going to say the same thing as you did.

Heh, I can't believe this thread has gone on this long, people get all worked up about dumbbells I guess.

Well, I don't use a lot of dumbbells, but when I do, I usually do what Hogg does, which is lower them to the floor quickly without letting them crash.

I think its unreasonable to expect people to not do this, as it really doesn't hurt the dumbell. By the same token, I think its unnecessary to drop or especially "throw" dumbells. That seems excessive to me.

By the same token...as Hogg and others have already said...if the owner is that protective of their equipment, then maybe you just need to change gyms.

Bro,

If you got a little balance and core strength at the end of the set (flat or incline), bring the weights back in to your chest as you would finishing your last negative, then at the same time throw your legs up, curl your upper body forward and let your arms extend downward as you let go of the weights. This way you can be close enough to the floor when you let go so that the bitch wont get her panties bunched up, AND the stress to your shoulders is reduced to a strong degree.

Well I can do 150's-160's and as hogg said i can't sit up with them and then stand up and lug them back to the rack in one graceful swoop and....I don't fucking worry about it. I go as far down as i can then control the weight to the floor. However i do not let the weight leave my grip i just don't resist it much and it hardly makes a sound...as far as the saleswoman....Ask her where she got the damn money from to get the equipment there in the first place...The weights in the gym i workout at are MINE, hell i pay dues! :D
