Disrespectful? I support individuals' desire to air grievances and propose solutions (from modest to radical). However, I see it more as a distraction from the issue of police misconduct and brutality (albeit usually inadvertent) than necessarily disrespectful. And unfortunately, opponents of police reform can cherry-pick extremists views to derail any meaningful action.
Any police reform these days is considered extreme. However lets study the history of how our police budgets and revenue collection has exploded since the late 60's
These people talking about defunding police aren't proposing anything radical in the least. I simple reset is all that is being requested, since Nixon's war on hippies and negros kicked off the police state and mass incarceration, the budgets have gotten so bloated to where now we spend almost or more than 50% of our local taxes on all aspects of law enforcement....legislators, courts, judges, prosecutors, cops, wardens, guards, jails and prisons. These fuckers have been bleeding us dry and they have the nerve to call us out for requesting budgets cut.
Like I mentioned above, only 5% of arrests are for violence. I read my local arrests and convictions every Sunday in my paper, nothing but drugs and paraphernalia, a few thefts, domestic violence, a few fist fights. Last week there was about 45 drug convictions, 4 thefts, 1 domestic violence.
None of those people using drugs caused me any problems at all, as for thefts...buy insurance, domestic violence don't get married or live with someone you hate....problem solved.....police budget flushed.
I'm not sure why the radical right have taken to championing the police, it would seem to me a conservative idea to cut taxes and with it LE budgets, if you don't feel safe wear a gun.
Ron Paul said it best...everyone in America should have guns except the police.
