Honestly, this is why I'd recommend anybody with a highschool-level science education and a willingness to experiment to research synthesis of testosterone from DHEA,

There are several routes that are either 2 or 3 step procedures that can be performed with nothing more than basic glassware, and common + legally available reagents.

For 2-step procedures, you have:

- NaBH4 + Activated MnO2
- NaBH4 + Oppenauer

And for 3 step, the "easy" route is:

- NaBH4 + TEMPO/NaOCl (Bleach) + HCl

Oppenauer might be a little trickier at home, but MnO2 or TEMPO should be cake for most people.

The high-level idea is the below, which has a billion resources online for each reaction:

1) Reduction of 17-Keto -> 17b-HO
2) Oxidation
3) Isomerize the 5 double bond -> 4 position

The 2-step procedures combine oxidation + isomerization
I know nothing of chemistry but I'd like to figure this out.

The only impact this has on Chinese packs is a much higher proportion can be potentially inspected because of the lower overall volume, until mail status to flow from the places that paused.
 
You're not wrong and it has me thinking this might not matter. I'm concerned, but at the same time how long has the US been fighting and losing the "war on drugs?" Prices will probably go up and we won't have as many options, but this will never go away completely.

There's also a pretty good chance China will make some bullshit promise that'll never materialize but will give Trump a good headline and none of this will happen. Fingers crossed.

I posted this in one of the doomsday threads.
Actually spent quite a bit of time on this, because of China situation.

The "realistic" kitchen-chemist way to produce Testosterone is from DHEA raws from Amazon.

All of the below can be done with basic glassware + easily available and cheap reagents.

1) Reduction of 17-Keto -> 17b-HO
Dissolve DHEA in methanol/ethanol. Add NaBH4 slowly @ room temp, stirring.
Quench excess NaBH4 w/ HCl, then extract or evaporate.
Result: Androst-5-ene-3b,17b-diol
> "Synthesis of 5-androstenediol (2). To a solution of DHEA (14.00 g, 0.049 mol) in THF (150 mL), NaBH4 (2.38 g, 0.062 mol) was added at room temperature with stirring..."

2) TEMPO Catalyzed Oxidation
Dissolve diol intermediate in DCM.
Add small qty of aqueous sodium bicarb buffer
Add catalytic qty of TEMPO
Slowly add NaOCl dropwise, stirring vigorously @ room temp
Quench, separate organic layer, wash, evaporate
Result: 17b-hydroxyandrost-5-en-3-one
> 3b-HO steroid -> corresponding 3-keto using catalytic TEMPO + aqueous NaOCl + an alkali in a DCM/water biphasic system

3) Isomerize the 5 double bond -> 4 position

Dissolve product from (2) in EtOH
Add conc HCl dropwise
Either warm to ~40-50C for 30-60m, or just let it sit for a few hours
Neutralize with sodium bicarb
Extract w/ organic solvent
Result: Testosterone

Second route, which is 2-step, combines Oxidation + Isomerization into a single step but requires Activated MnO2 or Oppenauer reaction, which is a bit messier and easier to fuck up.

1) Reduction of the 17-Keto to 17b-HO
Same as above, NaBH4 in MEtOH/EtOH

2) Oxidation of the 3b-HO Group + Double Bond Isomerization
Activated MnO2 in acetone, or Oppenauer oxidation (Al(O-i-Pr)3 with an aldehyde)

Admittedly my expertise is pharmacology/biochemistry >>> org chem, but I _think_ these both work "on paper".

Ah these are all biosynthesis methods

Those are unobtainium as far as kitchen chemistry is concerned, no use even looking at them unless you can get genetically engineered bacteria and have tons of bioreactors laying around... (and the knowhow to use them)
