The Firearm thread...questions, advice, range reports welcome

With the recent thread by @NorthMich about buying a pistol, I thought it would be good to start a thread. One where any and all firearm related posts could go. A place to ask questions, get advice, post reports, etc. Post deals on ammo and guns.

I've very new to firearms, just started 3 months ago in my early 40s. Been to the range 3 times, I didn't do very well today. I've been doing a ton of research, slowly learning. I usually pick up on things very quickly, but I think the frequency is limiting my ability to learn.

Anyways, I know this thread might not take off and get activity. Wanted to try and see if we have some members Into firearms.

I'll say this. I bought a performance center SW 9mm and Glock 19 at the same time. Been shooting only the SW the first few times out. Pulled out the Glock today and hate it. The trigger is much harder and has to travel much further before it shoots.

Per advice from another forum, I'm going to stick to one gun while training. I'll play with the Glock after I get the basics ingrained. But I'm regretting buying the Glock.

I just bought a handful of glocks (9mm and 10mm) because local shop was selling bnib for 400 cash. I haven't even shot them yet. I really like the F&N 9mm I got a year or so ago. Not cheap but fits me well.

Have you looked into the laser fake bullet things? You aim at some sort of target and pull the trigger and it will tell you where you "shot". Friends have told me about them but I have not gotten 1. If you find a real good setup, lmk!

Definitely prefer the look and feel of the Smith and Wesson M&P line over glock
The one I have is MP9 Shield Plus with the flat face trigger which I really like. Sure hope I get used to the glock eventually, especially considering I spent $550! The fiber optics on the SW are awesome.

A guy at work told me about these weeks ago, but I forgot to look into it. Do you really think the practice with them translates to live firing? One thing I'm struggling with is trigger finger and hand movement stability right before firing, anticipating recoil.

I'm sure it'll help some. It probably won't fix everything but the more times you hold the gun and pull the trigger correctly, the easier it'd gonna be to do it when it counts...

Just a quick tip-

A lot of ccw guys practice shooting at the range. But they don’t practice drawing from their CC holster and re-holstering. I’ve seen videos of guys struggling with their holster in emergencies because they buy the gun, put it in the holster. And in the holster it stays….Practice unholstering and practice reholstering.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

I’ve owned a Glock model 22 40 cal before and it shot great and was basic and reliable. I think dependability is Glock’s greatest asset, but price? NO, the price of Glock compared to competitor firearms is outrageous and several of Glock competitor guns are now coming in a couple hundred dollars cheaper with more features provided stock to boot.

Glock is not a bad gun, it’s a great gun if you want dependability and durability. Personally I like the look of other guns better myself. I’m sort of getting sick of Glock being used as the standard for handguns lately

This is literally life saving advice. Being able to quickly, confidently and accurately draw your weapon and get on target is far more important than WHAT you carry.

You can also get on target before your arm is straightened out. So many ppl have it in their mind that the arm needs to be outstretched to pull the trigger but you can begin firing as soon as that weapon is a few inches out of that holster and get on target as your firing. The faster you get that gun in the fight, the greater the odds of survival and threat neutralization

I also recommend an owb holster. I don’t carry iwb, it’s owb only. Another lifesaving tip is to always carry with your gun chambered. If you have to rack that slide you are at a huge disadvantage
Oh Jesus, yeah. That should go without saying. That's like telling someone to use an alcohol swab before they inject. Lol ALWAYS CARRY ONE IN THE CHAMBER

I would never ever carry OWB. Number one everyone can see the bulge on your hip, two you can’t practically carry at 12 o’clock and definitely not 6. Three, I’ve seen videos of guys disarmed by someone standing behind them because they clearly were carrying. It makes no sense carrying a gun if everyone can see it. It’s a big tactical disadvantage. Even if it’s a retention holster, you may just get robbed of your weapon. I carry IWB at 12 o’clock. My holster looks just like it’s part of my belt buckle.

You’d never know it was on me, also depends on what you’re carrying and wearing. I’m not talking abt open carry here, I’m talking owb concealed. I pull the shirt up with the left hand and pull with the right

You can buy a new "trigger pull" for glocks that makes the trigger lighter. I usually replace mine with one that is 4.5lb. They are around $20.
May look into that, thanks. I'm not paying for a Apex, that's all the rage and more than I want to pay.

For those interested, Canoe Club USA has 1,000 9mm for $280. Not a bad price for bulk ammo, just grabbed some for training.

Edit: $280 shipped

One gun that I picked up a couple months ago that is a lot of fun to shoot and extremely accurate is the Taurus TX22. I was looking for an inexpensive handgun that was cheap to shoot and just get range time with and decided to grab a TX22. It’s actually one of the most accurate guns I’ve ever shot and it’s a blast! It holds 16+1 rounds and it just bangs, it’s 17 ounces and feels like I’m holding an air soft gun or something. Picked it up on sale for 269$
