I think its time

I've always considered myself a "wannabe" powerlifter because I love the sport but never competed. I'm only getting older and I owe it to myself to take this seriously. About to join a gym that specializes in powerlifting and really excited about it.

What are these gyms like? I've never had a coach so this would be new. Also how much per month is average for this? Just curious

Mine is $25 a month. It's in a bad neighborhood and the equipment is old and mismatched. You can play metal and gangster rap and lift with your shirt off if you want. Nobody complains about deadlifts being "too loud" or other dumb shit you hear at commercial gyms.

Been to a few others when I was on the road at my last job. I guess the common denominator is there's more people there to actually get big and strong. Less casuals or at least they don't cater to them like at regular gyms. Better atmosphere.

If I wasn't plagued by injuries lately I think I would've been hitting more PRs just from lifting with other people that are actually strong.

Dang I think this gym is like 200 a month. Is it worth it?
Does that include anything more than just a membership? Between coaching, gym membership, and nutrition, I spend $280/mo. So if anything else is included, it MIGHT be worth it

although, to be fair by gym is only $50/mo. It just happens that I spend money on other stuff too

Its membership and coaching specific to powerlifting. They offer nutrition but don't know if thats included

I’d look at it like:

Is $240 a month for coaching worth it? You know a memership shouldn’t be more than $40. So does that make sense? Plenty of online coaches for cheaper. Does the atmosphere and hands on coaching satisfy the value proposition here?

It’s amazing how motivating being around people who share your goals is.

I’ve hit PRs lots of times when I had people screaming at me that I know I never would have got up while training alone.

That and having fucking gorillas to spot you is a comforting place to be.

Something to think about. I do think the price is crazy, but also think I would benefit greatly from the environment. Online coaching seems weird to me but I'll keep an open mind and look into it. I'd rather find a gym like @Perrin Aybara s, but everything I search for is kinda yuppie .

This is kinda what I was thinking. I think it would make me more serious about it.

Yeah or times you'd just call a top set good if alone when a partner would demand for you to add weight.

$200 a month seems like a lot. $2400 a year for a gym membership would be hard for me to justify. Would really depend how bad the other options nearby are. Like if they're actually inhibiting your ability to train properly.

I tried a package like that

Worked out decently, but wasnt REALLY worth the price point in comparison to getting an actual coach, who did SOOO fucking much for me.

I find it's more of a compatibility thing with a coach/trainer than anything else... I have a preferred style and set goals in mind, where the guys who were around... although knowledgeable... weren't really jiving with my schedule and thought process.

That being said, I've had some friends who SWEAR by the style of membership you're looking at.
I'd suggest trying it out for a little while and seeing if it is something you enjoy and progress with.

If it isnt.. find a coach that you work well with and trust their style of training/progression
Getting a coach that you trust and work well with... is like adding a a Gram of Test to your stack, truly nothing like it brother.

Lol I like the analogy. I think Ill try it out and give it a chance. Not sure how to just find a coach, they all seemed to be affiliated with a gym

That was going to be my next question. If the coach you’re getting is just a gym coach, it may or may not be worth your time. Have you gotten to talk to any of his/her clients? Do they seem to be able to put up decent numbers? Or is he some bacon that is only a coach because his buddy owns the gym?

He's the owner. Says he was a strength and conditioning coach and holds Indiana state RPS record in the 165 weight class

The gym I checked out last weekend was only $170 a year, and was a PLing dream. They had every hammer strength machine + a ton of racks, benches, etc. to me, it’s the atmosphere I’m looking at.

That sounds sweet. I live in a very liberal area so maybe that's why I can't find anything like that. Crossfit gyms everywhere but almost nothing powerlifting

No. With it being a coaching package possibly but I’d want to know who he’s coached and what level they make it to. What area are you in? There has to be a better option
I'm in michigan (college town). I'll try to find out when I meet with him Friday. Is there a better way to find out places besides Google? I do like that its less than 5 minutes from my house
