Edit: also take into account I'm talking about a rifle with a receiver that is Miller from a block of solid steel. Not a stamped metal receiver folded together like most AKMs.

Hmm, I think you should get a better tool for the job - a 7.62x39 has about a 7 or even 8 foot drop at 500 yards... not much power left at that point either. It's a short, relatively light bullet launched at moderate velocities - you can't win against physics.

The AK is meant to be used effectively up to 200-300 meters. Sure, you can hit stuff at greater distances, but that's not more relevant than the fact that I could consistently hit targets at 200 meters firing a 4" barrelled 9mm service pistol Olympic style (one handed) while I was in the military - it's not a realistic assessment of the effectiveness of the caliber.

Also, the 7.62x39 is not identical to the 30-30 at all - the 30-30 caliber can take much heavier bullets for example.

Then there's the big boy Soviet round - the 7.62x54r - but that's a pain to shoot.

Not dissing your favorite gun/caliber - just saying that you're taking your love a little outside the designed specs. Definitely a worthwhile weapon to own though!

I have a Nagant, that thing is fucking classic. I'll dig up a pic of my girl shooting it, it's classic.

My grandfather had me and my sister at the range when she was about 7 and I was maybe 11. Teaching us shooting skills. He had me shoot a 6.5 bolt-action Mauser - wooden stock - kicked like hell, or so I thought. My sister got a 9mm full auto only SMG, and she had to focus on pulling off single shots. Loved my grandpa....

I didn't say the 7.62x39 was identical I said they have nearly identical ballistics. Very similar.
Edit: maybe I did say identical lol. Very similar.

He was legendary - strongest hands I've seen - he was always messing around, trying to crush my hands when we met - took me until I was in the army in my mid 20s (and he was in his mid 70s) before I outpowered him.

He tracked down a rabbit on foot - just to see if it could be done - took him better part of a day, jogging after the rabbit until it couldn't deal with the heat exhaustion and need to pee - killed it with his bare hands, wrung its neck. He did many stunts like that - loved his hunting.

Ha ha - a caliber war thread! :-) The 30-30 is just a better round overall - you can load lightweight (125gr) bullets and drive them much faster, or heavy (190gr) and hit harder than you can with the more limited 7.62x39. It's hunting versus military - different jobs. Powerlifting vs bodybuilding - which is "better"? - both involve using heavy weights.

I still like the .308 much better - it's just manlier. :-)

True, my chick has been fucking blonde, red headed, 4 different shades of brunette and black hair. I can't even remember what her natural is.

Of course man lol. You can do leaps and bounds more with a 7.62x51. My only point is a don't see the 7.62x39 as being an inferior round.
