“What counts in powerlifting “ General Population view on powerlifting

I’m sure when the rules were written, it was never envisioned that dudes would be getting a 2-3 inch ROM and that generally speaking everyone would performing more or less a full ROM bench.

I'm not sure that I agree. There's a reason for max legal bench grip width. Keeping your ass on the bench as a rule also plays into that.

BUT IIRC, Ed Coan would put the bar so low on his back that he essentially changed the ROM of his squat (actual distance the weight was moved) so much they made a rule against ultra low bar squatting. Why not do the same with bench? It’s one thing to maximize leverages, it’s a completely different thing to contort your body to the point of essentially eliminating 80% of the work done.

Ed Coan tried to fight the notion that he was going ultra low bar... So much so that he pulled off his shirt to show the judges the blood line in his back going across his rear delts. I have to say, with how Ed was treated, I think that rule change was more political than anything. They're still trying to fuck that guy and he's done more for the sport of powerlifting than most.

To each their own.

With this one, I never really dove deep into the details of it, I just remember there being a rule change due to the way Ed Coan squatted, and I knew it had something to do with low bar squatting.

I have also heard and read a lot, the same thing you're saying here, that many people just didn't seem to like him for whatever reason.

He popped hot for a few drug tests. He was made into a villain ever since - I forget the federation but even today they fuck with him.

Looks like IPF

"Coan has failed drug testing through the IPF three times. He was temporarily suspended in 1985 for the use of Deca, an anabolic steroid.

In 1989, he was suspended due to a positive drug test.

In 1996, at the IPF Men's Open World Championships in Salzburg, Austria, he tested positive again and was issued a lifetime ban from the IPF. Because this positive drug test occurred in a competition in which he placed first, his name and results have been retroactively removed from the 1996 results. Coan is now suspended from IPF for life.[10]

In 2016, the IPF declared that due to Coan's suspension participating in his training seminars is a violation of WADA regulations and thus prohibited."

This is where they've really been fucking with him because, IIRC, they were pressuring other feds to stop allowing him to do seminars too. He talks about it in a podcast where he admits he broke the rules but they're not applying the punishments very equally.

It was USPF back then before USAPL. Yes the main issue was with the IPF as btcowboy posted. I don’t think they did that to Captain Kirk, so yea Coan gets the short straw on all that. Especially since steroids weren’t illegal in the early 80’s

I always wondered why they didn't say anything about captain Kirk. I would find the chance of him being natural about 0.000001%. lol

Edit: Probably because they were afraid he would throw a 45lbs plate at their head. Lol

Who is Captain Kirk?

I thought the sumo thing = cheating started off as a 4chan meme / bait lol.

People have been bashing ridiculous bench arching ever since people started doing it. It are mostly the lower weight classes and women who do this. A 105kg+ dude typically doesn't have the mobility to get a really ridiculous arch. I've seen some suggesting to make the maximum grip width lower in the lower weight classes to counter this.

This is why powerlifting will never be a popular sport. Too many ways to cheat in it.

1) PED's. It's not who's strongest, it's who's willing to risk their health to the greatest extent, possibly even death, to hold the title.

2) Bench Shirt's. LOL. Why not put rubber bands on the ceiling to help your bench.

A lot of this has to do with if you have the $ to buy these drugs, and the knowledge on how to use them properly. Not your strength.

I'm going to have to say this is false. Like with any other sport the main determining factors of whether you will be successful or not is,

1. Your mindset
2. Genetics

Especially in powerlifting drugs being the golden ticket just isn't true. Try to throw 200+ pounds on your total in one 12 week cycle and you're probably going to end up injured in one way or another inhibiting you from making any more gains for awhile. Some people seem to be made of bionic parts, but once again that's more of a genetic thing. Most people aren't capable of blasting drugs and lifting like a madman without getting injured making the whole idea kind of irrelevant to 99% of people.

Genetics , as in the ability to be handle super large doses.

Mindset: as in.. willing to take extreme risks...

Mindset: as in having the intelligence to do some of the more intellectual things to use PED's effectively.

The day is gone where the most naturally strong man wins. He may not be bright enough, or stupid enough, or have the $ to play the game.

This is true in all sports. Powerlifting will never be popular because the way competition is conducted isn’t fan friendly
