Useless hobby?

I’m a “professional” and it’s just about presentations. Buy some “normal clothes” to wear to places like that. Let your freak flag fly in other places. We all have our vices and freak offs. Some just hide it better. Sadly people will judge you on your appearance. You don’t have to hang out with these people but fitting into society has its perks and you don’t have to sell your soul to take advantage of them.

I've always had the personality where I try to be different with some things. For example, I live in Chicago but I'm a Raiders fan, not a Bears fan.I purposely root for a out of state team to go against the grain. Country and Rap are popular but I'm turned off because that's what the majority listen to. I'm a big believer in genetics. My dad had the same personality quirk. He'd root for California teams being born and raised in Illinois.

My only hobby is listening to death, black and thrash metal and lifting weights/cardio. Besides spending time with the family of course. I don't know if it's a 40 year old midlife crisis but I'm starting to think I should lose the metal and the lifestyle that comes with it. Conform fully to what a 40 year old, suburban, father and husband is supposed to look like by societys standards. The band shirts, wearing mostly black, and being non religious all are not normal.

Pros to metal: 1. Keeps me motivated to excerise and continue exercising in the gym. Gets me through heavy, intense training.

2. Stress relief and feeling empowered. I never feel the need to bully people or make others feel small. I get my feeling of power from metal. I see in humans an underlying need to bully or have power over others.

3. I truly enjoy the music. I love riffs! They speak to me in a way. The mainstream prefers lyrics about money or relationships. I just want to hear beastly riffs.

Cons

1. Can metal fuel anger? If so, that's definitely a con.

2. Your an outcast. For example I wore an Immolation (a death metal band) beanie to my kids baseball game. I would bet my paycheck not one parent there heard of Immolation. I would definitely get some looks like, what the hell does his hat say, looks weird. At this game you'll see the typical north face beanies, sports team beanies, etc. Obviously nothing that stands out like mine...

I realize the majority will see this as a stupid thread but hopefully someone can add some insight to it. Thanks
Honestly when I first saw the thread title I thought this was gonna be about something wild like hobby horsing or furry play or whatever. My 18-year-old niece keeps telling me about all sorts of weird new “hobbies” people are into these days..

But man, you’re just listening to the music you love. Nothing wrong with that at all. I’m a big metal guy myself, nothing hits harder in the gym. Like others said, just do what makes you happy. It’s a harmless passion, and if someone gives you weird looks because of your music or your shirt, those people clearly aren’t your kind of crowd anyway

I paint, draw, write poems to my girl and friends, audio book when I can, in the nicer months work on the house, every now and then when I'm along at home solo I'll smoke weed once a month or less.

I'm happy
