After years of listening/practicing the everyday conventional way to get ripped, I have come to the conclusion that 90% of what you hear is BULLSHIT. Everything from the 20 min window for pwo nutrition, the 1-2 grams/lb of bodyweight protien balogni, the overtraining hype to much of a degree, MOST supplements including protein powders that are "pure isolate" the 1 cheat meal per week rule, its all bullshit!!! If only I had gone my own path and listened to my body years ago!! I have gone plenty of days without eating within an hour of training, eat 4 regular scrambled eggs instead of a shitload of whites, occasionally eat fats pwo like natty pb, reg eggs, avocados. I eat when I'm hungry, not 6 meals everyday like the gospel, some days 3, other days 7, whatever!!! This is crazy, I'm only 8 lbs off competition weight, shredded as hell, and it seems like I'm only trying half as hard!!! Sometimes I have 3 cheat meals/wk, sometimes 4, sometimes none. Instinctive training/nutrition 100% of the way. I'm back down to 150mg/wk TRT dose only, and I'm still getting stronger and leaner. IMO much of what you read os all speculation and theory, and to get so anal about things you cant have a life is retarded. Its just too easy to stay shredded now, going my own path

It's always been that way bro. Nutritional fads come and go and then get recycled under different names.

I used to treat Arnold's old "encyclopedia of bodybuilding" as my bible. I wish I stayed with most of his philosophy's as my physique would probably be in a better place.

His book says 4 meals a day pre contest w/ a 40/40/20 macro split of protien/carbs/fat.

Instinctive training is the key I think. Listen to your body. It takes time to learn what it is saying, but once you figure yourself out, you unlock your true potential IMO.

Also, on training, most people do NOT have to worry about overtraining. I would say under training is more of an issue. Overtraining is a cop out for most to do less work. Those guys were in the gym slamming weights for hours on end, and hitting all body parts 3x per week. Most guys on this forum are doing larger cycles then they were so that's a cop out.

The average desk jockey going to the gym not only could, but should hit every body part at least 2x per week.

For example, I have shitty calf genetics. It sucks because my father has calves like Dorian and he's never lifted weights. The only way they grow is if I literally hit them everyday w/ 100 reps of something. They still suck, but hitting them 1x per week on leg day does nothing. Years ago I put an inch on my biceps over the course if a year doing a few sets of concentration curls w/ a 20lb db every night while watching tv, in addition to my regular arm work.

You know all this stuff, and this was just my long winded way of agreeing with you.

I think I'm going to go do some curls standing on the bosu ball now :)

90% of what you hear is BULLSHIT.

I hear ya man. I am discovering that more and more after time and tweaking my diet how the general "rules" of bodybuilding shouldn't be treated as gospel, but more of a rough starting point. I feel that the eat 6 meals a day, drink your protein within the "one hour window" post workout rules are just a guide for people entering into the sport. its points them in the right direction, but that's about it.

The thing to remember is 90% is bullshit....for you. For someone else it may work fantastic. I have friends who diet and bulk nothing like me, but we both are getting results. It all boils down to knowing your body, and that's not going to come in a magazine, it just takes time.

I know how you feel I just got with a new trainer on my food and he say no chicken to much sodium and i was eating 8 meals a day with broccoli. no cheat meals very strict. i was around 3000 cals or less. Now i can only eat veggies talipia and very small amount of carbs. six meals IM at 1500 cals now. I was at 200 with body fat 15% and now IM at 190 with 10%bf and starving does seem to work. I work 14 hr shift IM starting to feel like an Ethiopian kid

It really is all BS and like already said same old stuff rehashed under a new name with a new author same crap. It never made a difference if I drank a shake after a workout or fasted, 6 meals a day, whatever I do better and feel better when I eat 2 meals sometimes 1 meal a day, it does take awhile to figure out what works best for you but atleast you know what works rather than reading endless Bullshit and spending hundreds of dollars and wasted years doing useless crap.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's all bullshit. But it's still the nutritional basics that account for the overwhelming majority (90%) of success. Trying to optimize all these other things only makes a small difference in best case scenario (<10%).

The problem I see is that MOST people spend all their time, money and effort focusing on the 10% while largely failing to stick to the nutrition basics.

These are the people who spend all their expendable income on "supplements" while not having any money left over to buy quality food, etc.

That right there pretty much describes 90% I went to high school with that lifted. Add to that the fact that were scared to actually do a REAL workout and go hard.... Didnt wanna "overtrain". And wonder why they never grew, hmmm time to try next big supplement, that will work.... Pull up and Dip routines work...But they are hard....a bunch of machines and curls are easy so they did that..... More people need to worry about UNDER training than over training IMO

Unconventional also means you’re not afraid to go after what’s hard, not afraid to break with traditional approaches.More importantly it means being smart

DD, I see how this could be true for someone who is more genetically gifted or on the naturaly lean side. I'm on the chubby side and if I eat whatever I want or feel like then I will ballon up and not in a good way. Trust me, I've been there, done that.

No cop out or excuses for myself, but I am a hardgainer so I train, eat and rest appropriately. Results are good right now and I'm not affraid to learn more.

I've been doing the Unconventional, for about 40 years. I 'am old school, and I've never paid attention to all the nonsense. Sometimes, I might try something new, but its really old, (if you look back), people just forgot about it. Keep going down your own road. If its working for you, don't let anyone try and sway you, with the Bulls***. You know what works !!! Keep on rolling !!!

What I did was start making my own meals to grab.
Hitting the weights and a little cardio helped too but eating good stuff in small portions is 80% of it all.
After being a fat a$$ for over 10 years I went from 6' 298lbs to 184.
Have been trying intermittent fasting for almost a year but I think I need some breakfast now :)

For me it comes down to
The right AAS stack, and
Plenty, of pussy..

No pussy now is having my
Body Hold more fat.

Pussy is second, to none.,
Yea diet and training play
Somewhat of a role, in bodybuilding
But how much really

Great post! I agree 100%. Nutrition fads come and go. Always listen to your body.

agreed,it all depends on who you are and what works for the person as some are natty-shredded and some have to work hard to keep the lines.I do think a lot of supplements and proteins are bs and over hyped and good plain food is best.It really all just depends who your moma and daddy was really when it comes down to it I think. Some methods like just making sure you you meet your min macros but not mattering what time of day works for some.

Amen. I have plenty of good buddies that let their workout and nutrition regiments rule their lives.....and then there's me; I eat when I'm hungry, work out when I feel like it, rest when my body tells me I need to, etc. I eat well and train hard but I do it at a pace that doesn't stress my body out. Some of these same friends of mine always bitch about me having "genetic advantages" because I don't work on a schedule like them and I don't follow the same nutrition plan as they do but I get vastly better results. The truth is that without rest, good sleep, and lots of calories, you don't grow.

Exactly like you said: its all about listening to your body. Theory is great, but reality is better, and in my experience people who put their body their bodies through that type of strict regiment don't get the same results that people like us do.

Just goes to show you that training hard and eating well conquers all the theory in the world.

I've tried the whole intermittent fasting thing with my roommates and it was miserable. I was tired and lethargic all day, couldn't think, and hungry to boot. Sure I was leaning out, but I'll take my 10-12% BF and feel like life is worth living over that any day lol

intermittent fasting ive been that route as well couple years back,I leaned out but I actually felt insane and I had one of the worst back spasms of all time during that period when I look back... my gf thought I was having a heart attack.

Hm, IF wasn't a big change for me. The first week was a bit of a pain in the ass getting used to the hunger during off time, but after that it was pretty straightforward. 16 hours off sounds like a lot, but consider 8 hours of sleep... 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours before bed isn't really all that much. When I eat, I like to eat big meals -- IF lets you be a fat cunt for a little bit and still keep a deficit overall.

Any "magic benefits" for hormones and metabolism regulation are usually way overstated and is akin to worrying about the color of the bike shed instead of the rest of house. Get everything else in check, micros, macros, training, calories, and it hardly matters when the fuck you eat. Try it yourself and see!

For those that want to try it on a cut, I know yohimbine works well with IF since you pretty have to adhere to it or your wasting your money. Any insulin spike at all will blunt yohimbine. But I personally hate the stuff! Too much anxiety.

I agree with demondosage. Try timing your meals if it helps your sanity, but at the end of the day... eat less and eat balanced and that's all that really matters. Simple works.

I would have to agree. It took me a while to get into the single degits and to get there it happened with me eating. More calories with lots of fats, protein, carbs, and suger. But lots of cardio 1-2 hours a day plus 2 hours of weight lifting. 6 days a week
