Whats a good alternative to eating canned tuna all the time. Its so cheap with such a good amount of protein. But I know that it has alot mercury in it and I dont like to eat it all the time. Whats a good safe limit to eat in a week? And whats other good fish to eat with good benefits with less mercury?
Thanks

I read lots of articles and research on the mercury thing and basically came to the conclusion that the amount of mercury in reg tuna is not that high. The risk and dosage from tuna is minimal. I have been eating 2-4 cans almost everyday for over a year now and am not brain dead yet (depends on who you ask, I guess-LOL).

having lost a brother to brain cancer where no other cause was probable, I would advise you to rethink this. He ate a can of tuna everyday for years and was 49 when he died. I know the connection between brain cancer and tuna are not very strong. It is the only thing that myself and restof the family can figure out was involved. We have all been thru excrusiatingly lengthy interviews on lifestyle and eating habits by the national data center for brain cancer research. The frequent consumption of canned tuna was the only thing that came up. This is not conclusive though.

Thats crazy

Thats too bad about your brother. I think the mercury might have had something to do with it. It wouldnt be suprising to me. I just read an article not too long ago from the fda saying you should only eat a can of tuna a week due to the mercury levels. I dont know.

some people here and elsewhere are substituting canned sardines. This enhances omega three's also.

chicken salad, or canned chicken...its got tons of protien....but if you are worried about the mercury, then take a mineral called selenium, it bodns with mercury put into your body and takes it right out. Ive taken selenium for about 8 months now because i eat fish every day

Sardines do have about half the amount of mercury than light tuna, so I will have to check that out next time at the grocery. Both of them taste like crap any way so if one is better then why not.

I read up on selenium and found it very interesting.

Good tips. Thanks.

i use to consume a can of tuna everyday but then replaced them with sardines.
Ive been eating sardines since the early 80s frequently, plus they have more omega oils and callories than tuna which is good for me.
