Thyroid test values

Hopefully its acceptable to post questions regarding thyroid in this forum. If not I apologize in advance.

I had a host of blood tests run recently which did include tsh as well as free t3 and t4. The reference range listed for the TSH on the Labcorp sheet is .35 - 5.5. My result was 3.987. I have read in several places that the AACE changed this range in early 2003 (http://thyroid.about.com/cs/testsforthyroid/a/newrange.htm) to .3 - 3.00 and suggest that people who test above 3 be treated as hypothyroidal.

Secondary to the question above I would add that my Free T3 level was 3.9 with a range of 2.3 - 4.2 and Free T4 1.02 with a range of .61 - 1.76. Although I am struggling to understand all of the variables with the thyroid processes as I understand it in laymans terms a high TSH value is the pituitary calling out for T3. Generally from what I read this is accompanied by a low T3 level and would be diagnosed as primary hypothyroidism. In my case the T3 level is actually on the high normal. Although I cant seem to find much info this appears to possibly indicate an issue with the pituitary and a possible secondary hypothyroidism.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and if this is wildy off base or crazy I apologize. Just trying to read , learn and evaluate.

Thyroid optimization is a very imprtant part of Anti-Aging medicine.

Here is how we interpet your labs: your Free T3 is just great. That means you have plenty of thyroid output.

Your thyroid is having to work hard to produce that much hormone, though. This is what we call "sub-clinical" hypothyroidism.

In your case I probably would add in 1/2 grain of Armour thyroid, irrespective of whether you suffer the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I like to see TSH at around 1.0.
