Son having knee pain when squatting

My son has recently started having pain under and around the knee cap when squatting heavy , he’s 16 and growing like crazy and also has hit 550 on back squat recently at football practice, took him to the local Dr who said inflammation of the patella tendon , told us two Alleve twice daily along with icing . I guess my question is does anybody have any opinions or ideas that could help relieve this

Listen to the doctor, sounds like he might have strained something. Maybe take a break from going heavy for a while until it heals up.

Also does he wear wraps or knee sleeves?

Knee sleeves really helped my knee issues. I recommend some thick SBD sleeves. The compression and stability they provide is great.

Hmm. Check his squat form.
I'm surprised the doctor didn't tell him to stop lifting, that's usually their answer. So NSAID/ice & keep on trucking.
Make sure he's going ass to grass.

don't think its super smart to do uber heavy before you get man tendon strength as these injuries will continue to happen. esp when your growing or JUUUST finishing growing your tendons are stretched and not strong same as ligaments muscles etc. time after time ive seen this in high school and buddies kept lasting injuries into 30s some getting surgery most of the time surgery just made thing worse as weren't debilitating just would be sore when used.

anyway, best thing is to go to PT to get on strengthening the tendons after a few weeks of healing.. does it click or grind? they are also about 90% better than docs at diagnosing soft tissue stuff. esp if get a good one, stay away from PT who are Chiro or work with Chiro s too closely.. esp if can get a pediatric PT that would be best as can grill them for best practice for kids as shouldn't be doing adult stuff just yet esp without perfect technique.. IMO at least. I do think weight is important as best time to build ur structure/bones when young, again just in my opinion as makes sense to me. it also is best time to garner lasting issues it seems, me it was my knees, thought I was so cool doing full racks on leg machines, cut to dislocations and same injury as your son with knee caps. they crack and creak not only can u feel it folks walking down the stairs near me are like dam ur knees are loud lol.. fortunately dont hurt very bad but im sure its coming when start getting arthritic.

id say stay away from too much alleve, shits not super for ur kidneys, if can avoid it. omegas and baby asprin ;) unless cannot move without alleve. also anti inflamatory creams dunno if can get good stuff in USA but can be helpful targeting inflamation.. if need to even just 1 pill am or pm, pm being slightly more ideal IMO as during healing at night.. hot cold creams IMO are good first line for kids, or some Cbd creams maybe, some people find them helpful and very least great placebo for a teenager, although now days perhaps different, when I was young hemp seeds and hemp necklaces were the coolest as were weed but now less forbidden... perhaps some cucurmin with the omegas. imagine have him on some quality multi source proteins. my feeling is that whole beast protein powder may be good for healing, never looked at the label but seems like would have lots of minerals and aminos/collegen vitamins like d A B and E. and being food based and not artificial B vitamins like 99% of supplements my feeling is they are superior.

anyhoo, go to PT or can google up some elastic workouts online after several weeks. but a good PT is a great resource to ask questions get proper techniques etc. they also have fun tools to reduce inflamation

Some may naturally have more or less knee travel, But yes, I forgot it's 550, yeah that's a lot lol.
His knee def comes over his toes and we have been working on correcting this , got him sleeves and a brace and they have backed him off squats altogether right now . These kids are different now days , high school football is now a year round sport and on top of the fact they are still growing worries me . The coaches do there best but they don’t have the best form either and with the weight these kids are lifting now it’s scary

I have hard time believing this 16 year old boy can squat 500+ lbs with proper form.

I agree with others the issue is ego lifting and that this is way too heavy for such a youngster to lift.

Better squat 300lbs nice and clean than half assing 500lbs.

Also don't lockout! You will ruin your joints in the long term.

At 16 you should not need joint supplements and other drugs.

So train your son to leave his ego at the door and lower the damn weight before he learns how to properly squat while maturing in the process.

Agree with the ego lifting 100 % but tell a 16 year old and his buddies not to do something and let me know how it works out for u ! What the coaches don’t realize is these kids can get hurt with this amount of weight , as far as form all anyone is concerned with is depth , the lift actually came in a meet and he placed second ! They are pushing these kids too hard and I love lifting but also realize the dangers

Sorry, but why won't you look at your son's squat and give him advice?
Or do you both train separately?
That’s what we have been working on , we have been stretching and trying to loosen his hips up and I got him in with a local kid going to college to be a strength coach , the hard part is getting him to understand that form is the most important thing

Not sure if u have kids or not but daddy don’t know anything, especially when he’s not as strong . That’s why I went and got somebody else hoping he will listen

A 550 lb squat was a second place lift for a 16 yo kid in a meet?
How much does your son weigh?
Is this raw or “equipped” lifting?
