USPS clerks sort packages in the morning, They are sorted by route. The number on your package is the route number. That’s why it’s always the same number.

I get packages all the time with different numbers written on them. Not gear, but just random things ordered online. Sometimes it is one digit, sometimes it is 4 digits. Same goes for FedEx and UPS. It is not something to worry about. However, regarding the "postal inspector"...highly doubt it was. They do not make deliveries. And they are armed with a firearm and have their badge on display. I have had one of those visits many years ago and you would know it. Otherwise, it was just a normal delivery driver...maybe even a "plain clothes" driver who uses their own vehicle. I have had those come by, especially on weekends OR if the package was sent by Express mail and has a certain time requirement for delivery.

Yes it was international, but I’ve had multiple deliveries that were international which did not have this problem

I’ve banned the source permanently. This also happened to friends who were making orders too.

Depending on which USPS worker delivers your package they might want to get a signature, it's really hit or miss. One place I lived USPS would make me pick up all international mail from the post office which you had to sign for first.

I run a local delivery company. We mark packages with numbers or letters in a bold colour to make packages easier to assign to zones in the sorting department....but...packages arriving in our network that are already marked are usually packages under suspicion that have been opened/checked somewhere along the supply chain.

I have a small mom and pop postal center near my house. You can ship and receive usps, fedex and ups boxes from there. It’s $3.00 for them to hold a pack for you if it comes in. Or you can get a P.O. Box there. Works great for me. The guy never asks questions and I just pay the $3.00 fee. Never sign anything and never ever get asked for ID. Occasionally the guy doesn’t even charge me. I suggest finding something similar. The mom and pop places just care about making a quick couple dollars on each package.

This stuff was purchased months ago and only just now started streaming in. No control over delivery times, but I haven’t made any more orders.

That's not really how it works.

If it was the postal inspector, they would ask you for your name and to show id, then, once you confirmed that it is your name on the package, show you id, a badge, at least one of them would have a gun visible, a badge on the belt, and they would probably bring along a uniformed local officer just for intimidation. At a minimum they would ask you questions. They would probably ask your permission to open the box. If you don't grant it, then they would probably seize the package and take it with them then seek a judge's order to open (ridiculously easy to get).

But if you ordered Synthroid, just do it from legitimate overseas pharmacies. These places mark the package as personal medication, and it has been the policy of several successive White House administrations not to mess with such things. Every person with an underachieve thyroid orders that stuff. Technically, you are supposed to have a prescription, but customs is letting those packages through, and postal inspectors are not opening them, because they do not care about them.

I have a package sitting on my desk right now. It is not contraband. I examined it closely on all sides after reading your post. It does not have any marking number like the OP described, and I never recall seeing such markings back when I used to order contraband (but do not anymore).

Is this a thing in some locales but not others?

I may have answered my own question - since this is not contraband, it has the number in a coded area by the addresses as a part of the label made by the shipper. I think. Maybe.

Not exactly related, but I had an order opened and partially intercepted before. Customs took the HCG but delivered the trenbolone acetate. Nothing ever came of it.

It was delivered with big red tape around the foldings of the box with “OPENED BY CUSTOMS” embedded all over the tape.

The numbers are often the result of a mis-sorted package and that number coincides with the route of the delivery. I don’t think this would continuously be a misort but could be the route for the driver, also if they were looking to arrest you and you sold the evidence that wouldn’t be a very good case lol. It’s not on their list of rec. drugs like coke or heroin so some inspectors let it go thru. I once had a package opened with green customs tape all over the box. I opened the box expecting “the letter”. To my surprise, my lint roller that i order was there along with 50 gms of test c.
