Rand lost me pretty early in his political career coming in strongly IMO on the pro war side. Ron Paul was pretty much the last of the true libertarians holding office, and even he voted for the Afghanistan invasion with a political solution still on the table.

Anyway, the Republican party lost most of its libertarian supporters when it ran a harassment campaign against Ron Paul supporters in the 2008 primaries.

Ted Cruz’s presidential effort is getting into the shock-and-awe fundraising business.

An associate of the Texas senator, a recently announced presidential candidate, tells Bloomberg that a cluster of affiliated super-political action committees was formed only this week, and among them they are expected to have $31 million in the bank by Friday.

Even in the context of a presidential campaign cycle in which the major party nominees are expected to raise more than $1.5 billion, Cruz’s haul is eye-popping, one that instantly raises the stakes in the Republican fundraising contest.
 
I thought I read somewhere that Ted was driving millions toward Atheism, but he still manages a record hall???

Yet, when we talk about him in the FiveThirtyEight office, we usually put Rubio in the top tier, in front of everyone except Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, the two candidates at the top of the polls.

Why? Rubio is both electable and conservative, and in optimal proportions. He’s in a position to satisfy the GOP establishment, tea party-aligned voters and social conservatives. In fact, Rubio’s argument for the GOP nomination looks a lot like Walker’s, and Rubio is more of a direct threat to the Wisconsin governor than he is to fellow Floridian Bush.
 
Rubio's a conservative? Didn't he enroll in Obama Care and take the rather large "employer" subsidy? Didn't he also support EITC? I guess I need a refresher on what it means to be conservative..

For Marco Rubio, when it comes to gay rights, there’s always a but.

And it always seems to end up with a comment on not creating any laws that explicitly provide equal rights to LGBT people.

The junior U.S. senator from Florida will announce Monday that he’s running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. He’ll become the third Republican candidate to officially join the race, joining Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY).

As a young contender, Rubio, 43, has to appear like an open and tolerant candidate with modern sensibilities. But he also has appeal to his conservative voters—so often he acknowledges gay Americans are people that deserve respect, but not any specific laws that protect them from discrimination.

(Reuters) - Less than a week after announcing his 2016 campaign for president, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida doesn't need to worry about money.

It's as good as in the bank.

"Marco Rubio will have the resources necessary to run a first-class campaign, that’s already been determined," said billionaire Florida auto dealer Norman Braman, a former Jeb Bush supporter who is now one of Rubio's highest-silhouette donors.

Annandale Capital founder George Seay, who is hosting a Rubio fundraiser with the moneyed Dallas elite at his 7,000-square-foot, seven-bath home on Tuesday, said: "Marco has had zero trouble raising money."

At least seven other Rubio mega donors say their candidate has already received monetary commitments in excess of the $40 million he will likely need to battle through a presidential primary season that will feature a crowd of seasoned Republican candidates with strong financial backing.

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—Koch Industries is defending its acquisition of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker against charges that it overpaid for the Midwestern politician.

After co-owner David Koch revealed that Walker had become a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries, he set off a firestorm of criticism that the company had spent too much for a worthless asset.

“There was absolutely no bidding war for Walker,” an industry analyst familiar with the market value of politicians said. “Even Sheldon Adelson had no interest in acquiring him.”

While Koch Industries did not disclose the purchase price of the Walker subsidiary, it said that Koch Industries would spend nine hundred million dollars between now and November, 2016, for a variety of upgrades to the Wisconsin governor.

In a terse statement, Koch Industries argued, “Scott Walker is a perfect fit with our diversified portfolio of elected officials,” but indicated that, if Walker underperforms, the company would be open to selling him at a later date.

Two of the pillars of conservative Republicanism are crumbling just as the party is preparing for the presidential election. Obamacare, the object of Republican hatred for more than half a decade, is becoming more entrenched and popular. And a wide range of Americans solidly supports same-sex marriage, which the right despises.

So what’s a right-wing Republican to do? Pray? Or hope for a game-saving break from the party’s court of last resort, the U.S. Supreme Court?
