A couple of points.
These tariffs aren't going to affect drugs being illegally imported, When they're found, they're usually seized.
The tariffs aren't unlikely to go into effect anyway, India imposes huge tariffs on the tiny amount of American drugs we sell to India. This is unfair. The most likely outcome is India will stop charging outrageous tariffs on US made drugs, and tariffs won't be imposed on theirs,
Unfortunately the biggest threat is customs just getting much more efficient at figuring out what's in small packs and seizing more of them,
But the focus will be on China packs first, so hopefully we're got time before it impacts India pharma too much.
In the meantime, I plan to keep 3-7 years of "essential" meds. The blister packs India uses to protect tabs will keep them in good condition for a very, very long time. Put them in a mylar bag in a drawer in the fridge and you're probobly looking at 10 years+ for the vast majority.

This is what's meant by reciprocal tariffs.
Charging the same tariffs on your products that you charge on ours.
They do it to make American made products less competitive and harder to sell in their country, while enjoying being able to sell their goods in ours, tariff free. Free trade in one direction only, apparently, with American products (and companies, and ultimately workers) at a disadvantage.
Considering India is gong to drop their tariffs on American drugs so they don't get the same treatment, it makes you wonder why this unfair trade arrangement was ever tolerated.
There's only one small antibiotic factory left in the US, and it was barely surviving until the government subsidized it.

Soooo many things were tolerated, but the problem with making things even right now is that you and I are gonna suffer. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to pay more for anything.

It's because of Shareholder bank balance. Pharma companies aren't charity organizations. If not for government backing they won't even make vaccines. Generics are cheap as hell and there is little money to be made from them. Make tariffs 700% all you want, they will not invest in plants for local manufacture of generics. Instead they would wait for a crippling shortage and lobby government to allow them import for cheap and sell at shortage pricing to ease "pressure due to increase demand"

It is tolerated because each country has different industries and priorities that they want to protect. What good would there be to want equal tariffs on something that is barely profitable? This is the problem with things like chemicals and agriculture.
So for example, though we export more chemicals than electronics, the margin on chemicals is shit compared to electronics. One has net margins of maybe 10-15% while the other is around 40-50%.
For other nations however, they may not have tech like we do. So instead they tariff stuff they can actually make. Maybe that is chemicals. That way they can give their industries an advantage similar to how we tariff Chinese tech to give ours a boost. Almost all countries do this. They try to protect the things they value most. Tit for tat on similar items wouldn't make sense.
As for why we dont have generic drug factories... thats obvious. It has nothing to do with trade. They are not profitable. Because the minute any generic becomes profitable, someone else will jump in and pummel margin and it will be a race to the bottom. No idiot is going to build a business on something they cannot patent unless its micro size labs.
So if you want to see more generics made here, what you need to do is lobby to make it easier to open small drug manufacturing plants run by ma and pa. Those guys will not mind the smaller margins. They can probably survive on smaller volume as well. Problem here however... good luck keeping them safe. Ma and pa are notorious for cutting corners and monitoring them would cost an inordinate amout of money. You can try to leave it to customers to decide... problem with that is some drugs are killers.
I am actually for making it easier to build micro businesses. I would just make it a buyer beware sort of thing. No different than us here buying from UGL. In time we developed ways to test products and we coalesce around known sources. But how many people were hurt or ripped off along the way? How long did it take? Bottom line, no big business is going to make these generics. Its not worth it and its rife with risk.

very likely... gunna need a police state asap as people will start to get angry once everything goes up 25+%, less foreign comp will drive up prices aswell. sorta communist move if u ask me..
