Oh I am not taking anything away from columbo whatsoever. He was a very strong dude!
However hot water bottel popping is showmanship. Ever wonder why they are hot?
Its about force impulse more than strength, we blew up some bottles in chemistry and tempature and impulse had way more effect then total volume of air ( no doubt though he had good lungs, i mean he was a boxer!)

Can't say I ever wondered about that because it always seemed the answer's pretty obvious. They're hot AFTER you put hot water in them.

Hot water bottles are for putting hot water in... they're not hot themselves. They're not hot when they're blown up.

Sure, it's showmanship, I'm not sure what difference that makes. If you want to give it a try, let us know how easy it was due to the heat of the air from your lungs and your "force impulse".

Just like tearing a phone book in half. It's showmanship, and technique... and a whole lot of strength.

In general, I think we should respect the accomplishments of others, just as we would want others to respect our accomplishments.
