Increase bench tips

Honestly I always take it with a big grain of salt when a freak like Haack shares what program worked for him... I'm not John Haack and neither are you.

Maybe it's because I'm weak as shit, but I can bench four times a week without accumulating undue fatigue. I find that the chest can tolerate really ridiculous volume. I've noticed that when I actually fail a rep doing squats, I'm absolutely obliterated, whereas when I actually fail a rep on bench, it's no big deal, I can sometimes even hit another set. Maybe that's related to the whole training frequency thing, dunno.

Other posters mentioned targeting your weak points with bench variants, which I highly recommend. I also recommend proper powerlifting reps, with real tension in your legs, arched back, retracted and stable shoulder blades. Also try using wrist wraps if you don't already. This lets you move the most weight and that in turn should produce the greatest adaptation.

One other thing I should mention, if your lats are weak that can limit your bench, so do your pulldowns and rows.
Oh n for bench in general everyone (unless injuries prevent it) should try mixing up their grip so going wider going narrower trying to do different inclines all that variation both makes you stronger n also provides ample growth which in turn helps out with the numbers

I'm currently taking John Haack's advice and it is working well for me. It seems almost too simple, but he said he increases his bench strength by increasing the frequency in which he trains his bench every week. So, if you are training bench twice weekly, train it three or four days instead.
This. Given how new you are to the gym (8 months or so based on OP), increasing bench frequency will likely be easier and more beneficial than trying a bunch of weird bench variations at this point in time. When I first hit 225 a few years ago I was stuck there for a long ass time, form improvement and increasing frequency absolutely shot up my bench. Obviously, it goes without saying, make sure to exert yourself accordingly, can't be doing rpe 10 kys style training if you're going to be benching nearly every day you're training.

I am getting sick of pricks like you who try and knock others who are trying to find out what the best in the world does to get himself so strong in a particular exercise - 'Honestly I always take it with a big grain of salt when a freak like Haack shares what program worked for him... I'm not John Haack and neither are you' - If he uses a particular technique or method to get his bench as high as he does then damn well I am going to go to the ends of the earth to try and find out what it is, it may work for me or it may not.

Also, if you are saying you are weak as shit then why would your opinion on this be relevant?!

Honestly I don't think he was trying to knock anyone down, but I agree It is very redundant and almost unnecessary at this point in discussion.

But yeah nothing wrong in trying to figure out what will work best for yourself and trying new things.

I did a lot of conjugate methods for a long time, and it did make me strong, but I found doing more proven app and evolveai did.

#1 eat more food always be well hydrated, u will be stronger.

F ur 1 rep max, right now its trash. I would stick to a 5x5 program get stronger progressively in that 5 rep range.

Then later mabe work into a 531.

Yo I fw this comment cos it’s the truth, the guy he quoted was being the classic Reddit style weak minded mfka who assumes he’s inferior just cos people online told him to assume that, how about we start assuming we are better so we actually reach and go past our potentials? Nobody thought like this back in the day but it seems like now everyone got fkin weak as shit both mentally and physically n in my opinion it has less to do with actual real things but more so the mental state so many seem to default to.
It’s fkin pitiful n annoying as shit, same with the ’natty or not’ bs it’s making everyone assume that either one is weak as shit or they are on mad drugs n people who would have tried hard to get what they want start praising mid ass physiques cos they’re ‘easily attainable’ no shit bro it’s a mid ass physique pffft I even had an argument on Reddit with some idiot cos I said soon people will start saying you need gear to look like skinny Brad Pitt n this guy said but hey it’s a very desirable physique (I said ok sure maybe if you’re a lil kid, you can look like that without even lifting most of the time) but this idiot then proceeded to spout nonsense and denying anything great that could be achieved by anyone because idk tbh I have no idea the person was a fkin idiot so I didn’t really understand his argument. Either way too many people are getting way too bitchmade as per the example this guy quoted, STOP TREATING THE GREATS LIKE THEY ARE SOME SORT OF DIVINITY OR DIFFERENT TO ANY OTHER HUMAN, THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN FROM THEIR ROUTINES N OK MAYBE SOME WONT WORK FOR YOU BUT ASSUMING STRAIGHT OFF THE BAT THAT YOU ARE SOME ‘INFERIOR’ BEING IS JUST MAKING YOU INTO ONE, TRY FKIN WORKING YO ASS OFF N EATING LIKE A FAT FUCK YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED AT HOW GOOD YOU CAN ACTUALLY BE!

Sorry for the rant but I hate them type of defeatists n how they reason, no wonder humankind is going down the drain n everyone is turning into a lil bitch (btw I’m 30 years old not some old fk getting annoyed at the new generations, I’d imagine some of our grandparents are spinning in their graves though)

This or even do lots of triples, I found 5 x 5 to be alright but gained way more strength n hypertrophy (n had more fun) from doing 10 x 3 (usually it’s around 8/6 sets of 3 with a couple warmup sets and a couple back off sets done pyramid style), keep your rest times relatively short like a minute or so n you would be surprised at how much size you gain too as long as you’re eating good!

An example would be this (for the bench but I do it for most of my main lifts):

Main lift so SBD or Overhead press: 10 x 3 (in the warmups you can do even a couple higher rep ones or test your 5rm and try to do amrap of that then go on to the sets of 3) then after that I do a couple sets of paused bench (2/3 second pause on chest) for higher reps n that’s it for the main lift

After that if we talkin bench day I do squats in the same fashion then do the bench assistance stuff so incline db press heavy but going for 5-15 reps not more not less n then rows heavy fkin rows n then some isolation stuff finished off by pull-ups and weighted dips that I do each training session, shit is awesome it’s fun and it works

Exactly buddy - You learn from the Best. Thats what all the current great guys have done too, you don't just say 'ohh well they are different to me so I won't bother asking to see what he runs gear wise or training wise' - you look at what he does and see if any of it can benefit you. I appreciate genetically he has hidden advantages that we cannot really see such as a superior CNS and tendons, joints, recovery etc but there is sure as hell something that works about his programming/training too. Think about it this way bud - If you were lucky enough to be Haacks bench training partner for a year do you think you would be stronger than you are now??!! HELL YEAAAAAHHH!!!!!

I’ve tried different things over the years, but the thing that helped me the most to get past a sticking point was to pyramid up.
First few sets were lower weight and higher reps, then as I progressively got to heavier weights I’d do lower reps.
There would be 1-2 sets where I would push beyond what I could do and need a spotter to help.
Then I’d pyramid down and the weight would feel super light after doing a heavy max.
I feel that it helped trick my brain into thinking a heavy weight felt light after pushing so hard.

To expand further, the lats are very important in benchpress and often overlooked. Heavy rows. Guys that press 500 pounds plus often say you increase your bench by working every other muscle with exercises other than bench.
Lats are more into play than chest is, legs are more into play than chest!

We load our lats to pop off at the bottom while driving our legs, shoulders midway and locking out with triceps..

3 sticking points are:

Middle
Bottom
