Hook grip

Anybody have any tips on how to get my thumb used to it besides just doing it. I don't need to use it yet but I would like to start working on it now to get my hands/thumb used to it. I seen somewhere that tape could help. It hurts my thumbs just getting into position before I even lift the bar.

Start by taping your thumb incredibly tight just around the finger nail cause it's not the pressure but the decompression afterwards that really sucks. Also when you hook grip press your trough between index and thumb hard into the bar so your thumb wraps as far as possible around then grab it with as many fingers as possible to disperse the load.

At the end of the day though it's how much you're willing to tough through. I tore my lat and I'm convinced it wouldn't have happened if I was hook grip instead of mix grip just because of the way I brace so I did it out of necessity but then liked it considerable more then mix for how stable your back feels and even the pull is

Thanks, I'll try the tape. I just want to be able to use it if I ever need to. Have it in my back pocket so to speak.

Post a picture of your hook if you can or describe how many fingers you can fit in it, in some cases smaller handed weightlifters grow bigger nails on thumb in order to fit another finger in, mostly comes down to what is explained above, how much weight you disperse on how many fingers and well build up of callous of course...

Soft bitch hands are the opposite of your problem, it's actually the reason people choose hook grip as per George Leeman on youtube, check one of his videos where he explains how his callouses tear on mixed grip because of the bar rotation. I mean small hands as in short fingers etc. You have to fit as many fingers under your thumb in order to hold on to a barbell in a hook. Mine is 4 fingers in and so is my front rack but my fingers are on the longer side of the spectrum. As per above you can tape your thumb and also you can put a tape around the knurling to prevent callous tear until your build up your hook strength which is different compared with regular grip strength.
