Genuine questions...

Why don't subscribers get reaction privileges?

Sends the wrong message on the UG and testing threads?

Would the forum work better without reactions and reaction scores.

Those metrics don't count for anything at this point. Nice the tiered approach on members was removed. Are reactions a net positive or negative to the mission of forum here?

Because allowing sources or source-adjacent accounts to give reactions creates an obvious incentive problem. Sources end up rewarding praise, positive review, defense of the sources, and other sycophantic behaviors whether intentional or not. Removing reaction privileges from subscribers minimizes reputation manipulation. The goal is the keep feedback coming from Regular Members and not commercial interests.

As FYI, this is why (in the opposite direction however) when New Members sign up they don't have reaction privileges. Regrettably, a certain percentage of New Members arrive specifically to praise a source, bump threads, and inflate reactions often because they are incentivized with coupons or promos, etc. Making reaction privileges something that must be earned over time reduces the type of praise from New Members who only sign up to obtain incentivizes. Once a member proves they’re here to participate in good faith, reactions unlock naturally.

The harm reduction goals of MESO could possibly be bbetter served without reactions, but I still think reactions can offer some useful signals and also keeps the threads from being cluttered with people posting just to give thanks when a simple thumbs up reaction will suffice.
