I love those too, and doing them with 20lb db's certainly will make your shoulders feel like fire. The movement doesn't really aggravate the recent old injury in my right shoulder that's a plus.Arnold presses? Those are so much more natural of a movement pattern for shoulers, i feel less likely to injure
I primarily used dumbbells most of the years I've lifted. You have the right idea, full range of motion and good form is what is important.Hello,
It took a long time to build up to 50 KG (110 lbs) dumbbells shoulder presses for 5 clean reps, and when I say clean reps I mean the dumbbells are touching the shoulders in the negative, all the way down.
This is heavy for a vertical sitting press and I am suspecting the humerus could disengage at any moment without previous warning, so I am thinking about stopping this exercise and doing a classic standing military press. What do you think?
Yes just going ridiculously heavy with full ROM is asking for trouble, and 60lbs is the most I'm comfortable doing them with. 120lbs? Oh hell no as I'd be asking for a tear!I primarily used dumbbells most of the years I've lifted. You have the right idea, full range of motion and good form is what is important.
1 rep max is stupid and asking for trouble. I always kept it at 6-12 rep range.Yes just going ridiculously heavy with full ROM is asking for trouble, and 60lbs is the most I'm comfortable doing them with. 120lbs? Oh hell no as I'd be asking for a tear!
100% as I gave up barbell benching as it became more of a problem for my shoulders than it's worth. I just started picking up the 100's again nearly 2 years after I bungled up my right rotator on barbell bench. Military press on the smith machine is great and there should be no stigma to using a smith machine.1 rep max is stupid and asking for trouble. I always kept it at 6-12 rep range.
There's a difference between flat benching 350 and picking up 175's leaning back, doing your set, sitting up and reracking.
Imo dumbbells are a better workout.

I rediscovered the Arnold press recently and loved it. Now will be doing these more as less stress on the shoulders due to the movement being more natural. 25lbs Arnold press was pretty darn brutal after 3 sets and my shoulders still burned from my session 2 days ago.I always felt pain at the bottom of shoulder presses I figured doing these are better than doing half presses. Arnolds and lat raises are how I like to warm up my shoulder prior to benching.
Warming the shoulders up has helped me immensely with shoulder pain. Also as of late went to DB much more than flat bench.
All the power to you brother, and we aren't knocking you for that. I'm sure you know the risks of heavy weights you are using for shoulder presses have on the shoulder joint."Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but nobody wanna lift no heavy ass weight!"
I don´t train for 5 reps, that was just the top set, after that, I pick less weight and do more reps.
Anyway, overall that exercise is a lot of fun but starting to feel unsafe at higher weights, doing conventional standing Military Press with a good Belt seems a lot safer.
I respect people who want to get big with low weights, but I guess I am made differently.
I get where you’re coming from and I always pushed higher to challenge myself. But I want to keep lifting and the risk of injury is high on that exercise and higher as you get older. With so many variations of exercises that hit your shoulders try different ones with moderate weights and reps and see which you prefer. I kept great form and steep negative and one day my shoulder gave out and I was out 3 months no upper body. I aggregated it a little a while doing OHP so I was out a few weeks, I’m done with OHP."Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but nobody wanna lift no heavy ass weight!"

Never seen the Atlantis shoulder press machine but found doing those OHP's on a smith machine was easier with less stress (as you can pre position the bar to unhook and lift off) but seated as the smith isn't exactly high enough to do them standing.Atlantis shoulder press machine that has the thing you press with your foot to get the handles into position is nice. I tore my shoulder doing barbell OHP and those stupid
Mike isratel high range of motion lateral
Raises in 2021.
Will never barbell OHP again. I stopped going as heavy on dumbbells too. Can't imagine 120's but that's almost my body weight in each one lol
Secret tip: For a variation on the Smith machine, you could try lying flat down on the bench, chest down, kick the bar up backwards with your foot. Wearing crop top and extra small shorts. I read on the internet that it doesn't aggravate the shoulders.Never seen the Atlantis shoulder press machine but found doing those OHP's on a smith machine was easier with less stress (as you can pre position the bar to unhook and lift off) but seated as the smith isn't exactly high enough to do them standing.
I’m with you on this , full range of motion on 60 pounds and less, anything more and I try to slow it down - but range of motion does not go below parallel…Yes just going ridiculously heavy with full ROM is asking for trouble, and 60lbs is the most I'm comfortable doing them with. 120lbs? 60 pounds for shoulder presses is too damn easy. I can bang 90lbs dumbbells at 10 - 12 reps for 4 sets and I am not huge at all. I can't imagine doing my effective sets with 60 pounds dumbbells, very low intensity.I’m with you on this , full range of motion on 60 pounds and less, anything more and I try to slow it down - but range of motion does not go below parallel…
