Guns

Yeah they got alot of interesting caliber offerings. I think i even seen it in .45ACP? But i like the idea of a .357 or a .44 just because its an old cowboy rifle and its nostalgic like that. The lever action on these model 94s are sweet. It feels like the guts of the gun are just dropping out lol. Simple and effective. And accurate as hell! Henry has alot in this category
The “cool” factor is off the charts, So satisfying to shoot them. My local has an OD green with pic rails on it that I have been eyeballing for quite a while. I go right to it everytime I go in the store. $1500 is what they want
The action is soooo smooth.

How many of you have ever had to use a gun to defend yourself in your home or yard? I have. How many of you have been shot? I have. 5 times. I have the scars and the lead still in ME. And believe me it hurts. I hurt to this day where I have a cadaver bone and a rod from my knee to my ankle. The one up against my pelvis that took out 10 inches of colon shows up every time I get on x-ray, the tech asks "what is this in your pelvic muscle?" It's a 9mm.
Talking about how loud various guns are. I'll tell you this they're a whole lot louder when they're pointing at you. Gun nuts are idiots talking about "I'm gonna ventilate his ass." Most of you would shit your pants if anything was pointed at you. They're your toys and that is fine. Boys with toys. I like to shoot too for fun but 9 out of 10 can't hit shit when they're being shot at. That takes experience. Most of the time you'll shoot your family through the wall with most of the toys you're showing off.
Every generation of my family has had killers in it. Including this one. Usually for no good reason. Down here you didn't even get in trouble up into the 1940's for shooting someone as long as they didn't die. And if they were black you didn't get in trouble at all. Enjoy your toys but most of you are dreaming if you think you could use them under fire.

My FIL came over for the holidays and brought his inherited Winchester Model 94. This Model 94 was produced in 1954 which makes it a collectors item. It was a pre '64 model when Winchester redesigned the rifle to the the dismay of enthusiast's. The newer design just kinda fucked up the beauty of the old classic. These 30-30s mfg before '64 are pretty cool time pieces. It was inherited from gpa and he never even shot it during his entire life. My FIL brought it over and we broke it in together. These were my pins at 300 yards. Looks like the ol girl puts em where shes told.

Hes older than i am and cant shoot iron sites quite as well. He wants to put updated sites on this thing and im just like NOOOOOOOOO.
Id like to get one chambered in 30-30 or maybe even .44 or .357. Havent decided yet. Simply because its just plain cool. Henry Rifles has alot of cool offerings in this category. I may go that route.

All of us in this thread have way too much in common! I've been dying to buy a Winchester 94 ever since Hickok45 shot a pre '64 on YouTube. I love the .30-30 but I'm with you on this brother, would go old school 357 Mag or 44 Rem Mag.

Telling you brother the cool factor on lever guns is what’s hooking us. Got to get the side loading door, makes them even cooler.

I'm sorry you went through that. You do realize that non leo people defend themselves with firearms everyday?

It was a pretty cool conversation piece as we transitioned around the range. The ones who know picked up on it quickly. And the gun is in good shape. Like i said gpa was rumored to never have fired it. Even had some ammo from the 70s that was inaccurate as all fucking hell. But once i ponied up for some new rounds it was nasty as nose hair. Not much kick but i kinda wondered if it was a junior rifle stock because it was too short for my liking. Had too much elbow bend and generally not comfortable to hold. I learned pretty quick tho its best to half feed each round and feed the next one in to complete the sequence till it reached capacity which was 8. Otherwise loading each and every round individually would tear your thumb up after a few passes. Mainly due to how far you had to press the casing in to feed correctly.
It was a cool experience

You're right that these are my toys. I have a pretty cool gun range in my backyard. Nothing like Hickok45 but I'm slowly getting there, ar500 steel is expensive. We all have to have a hobby and I personally think golf is a waste of an afternoon so my only hobby is backyard shooting and IDPA or occasionally cowboy action/3 gun. Would I do well defending my home against Intruders? Probably not because I shoot every single day but probably yes due to my IDPA shooting. However you're right you never know until you know. Hopefully it never comes to that but if it does I feel more prepared than most.

Maybe it was a junior stock or maybe you're just much bigger than the men were pre 64 :D:D

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.
-Someone way smatter then me.

One of my favorite quotes of all time. I think it applies to everything WW2 related.

Are gun-cartridge carbines worth it for mid-range (100 yards) shooting and farm self defense?

They way more accurate and reliable than handguns. Follow up shots are faster, and less report too.
Many can be bought for <$700 (well, add the scope price). Are they worth it?

Are you talking Pistol caliber carbines ? Like 9mm, 45ACP ?

Like an AR9? Yes, definitely good out to 100 yards. Excellent practice leading your target when shooting at varmints.

Yep I meant pistol calibers. Thanks for the catch.
Yes they are worth it for both varmit and home defense. If you are comfortable with the AR-15 then using an AR9 will be right up your alley. CZ makes a great PCC as well called the scorpion. Ruger, Keltech and even I dare say hi point(if you want cheap but functional).

I actually believe you because of reading your posts. You could be blowing smoke but I doubt it. My point was really, and I do tend to go on tangents, that most of the firearms being displayed for home protection are very likely to punch through every wall in your house and a few of the neighbors.
I grew up with a brother and uncle that are gun NUTS. That is all they talk about, it gets tedious fast. I remember the first time I shot my uncle's 45/70. That was also the last time. Too much gun for me.
Just my opinion but for close range in home defense I like a judge with self defense rounds, can't miss with one. A saiga semi-auto shotgun with a 12 round clip, self defense rounds are pretty nice if there's anybody else home. Buckshot if I'm alone. And I live in the middle of 10 acres. If they're there they probably shouldn't be.
I do like a backup of a semi-auto handgun if I need more accuracy, plenty of good choices there. I like Sigs and Glocks personally but my first was a Beretta 9, I still have it but don't shoot it nearly as much as the rest. For "varmints" nothing beats the Saiga, the AK action is nice when shooting wild hogs.
