FDA dramatic reversal on Hormone Replacement Therepy. TRT next?

After decades of demonizing hormone replacement therapy for women, the FDA will actively promote its widespread use to improve the quality of life for millions of women.

The US Food and Drug Administration intends to remove most black box warnings from products containing estrogen and progestogen. The decision, announced Monday, is part of a campaign to promote wider use of hormone replacement therapies (HRT) for women.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, and other agency officials outlined the plans for the label changes in a November 10 article in JAMA and discussed the move at a press conference Monday at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC.

Makary said menopause can trigger profound changes in women’s lives, including “mood swings, night sweats, weight gain, hot flashes, divorce.”

He told attendees, “HRT has saved marriages, rescued women from depression, prevented children from going without a mother.”

Let’s hope TRT sees the same recognition by the FDA of its ability to improve men’s quality of life, gets them to advise doctors to treat based on symptoms and not withhold it based on the absurdly low “normal” Test level guideline most follow now.

about fucking time.
I always found it funny that women get the full experience of AAS-like side effects just by being alive for long enough. None of the gains tho.

Hopefully some men will share this with the with women in their lives who could, or will soon, benefit from HRT.

The clear language about how significantly this can improve quality of life, coming from FDA doctors with decades of expertise in women’s health, along with solid evidence of its safety, may finally counter the propaganda that’s not only made doctors extremely reluctant to prescribe it, but in my experience, the subtle media brainwashing of most women into being terrified of it giving them a heart attack so they won’t even consider it and suffer needlessly.

Yep....I have been sharing this news with the middle age women in my life. I have been encouraging my wife, now 40, to discuss and explore this with her doc. Her mother was on test and died from pancreatic cancer in her late 60s. She was convinced the Test was the cause. What I do know is that she was very healthy and vibrant until the cancer. She also suffered from lupus but overcame that easily from a very severe state. I am convinced this is a must CONSIDER for pre- menopausal women based upon my own experience with being hypogonadal. HRT improved my life dramatically.

Fantastic news! Very encouraging progress.

It gives hope at least, the more people may choose to learn and care, or at least be aware, of hormone health & wellbeing for women. ♥️ :D

(inb4/in during the gold rush + wild wild west stages of Women's HRT. Shops and clinics and businesses and Experts™ and more incoming. :P)

Looking forward to more and more people getting involved, genuinely. Now is the time for gaining awareness and education along with application. ✅

My lady went on hrt with test a year ago. It has completely changed her/our life for the better.

I'm very curious about this. How old is she? Was she on birth control by any chance?

Also if a girl goes on trt can she still get pregnant?
What if a girl takes birth control with trt? Lol I don't know shit about it just trying to learn .

My girl takes birth control and I just wonder how much different she would feel with out it and wonder if her natural testosterone is crushed from it as she's been on half her life

We're long past birth control. Too bad double deez isn't around. She was a wealth of knowledge for premenopausal women.

And WOMEN. It’s about f*ckn time those black boxes came off. The women’s health initiative didn’t do us any favors after they released cherry picked data back in 2002 claiming that estrogen was gonna give us all cancer (never mind that women MAKE plenty of estrogen and we aren’t all walking cancer labs).

Wait what??? This went right over my head.. can you elaborate?
We get older, our ovaries start to quit on us WHEN WE HAVE DECADES OF LIFE STILL TO LIVE, our estrogen tanks, and we experience:

- voice changes
- chin hair, ear hair, face hair, you name it
- thinning hair (for some)
- accumulated fat around our midsections (where estrogen is sequestered as our bodies try to conserve it)
- loss in bone density
- loss in cognitive function

But, while a lot of women see the above changes and view them as negative, we do NOT generally see an uptick in the ability to build and keep lean muscle mass.

Men typically experience a bit of ‘organ failure’ when they get to middle age, and the solutions are well researched, easy to obtain, and if not covered by insurance, very very inexpensive. But women? We experience MASSIVE organ failure (uterus, ovaries), and it’s not like they just up and die; they start twitching and thrashing around like a dying animal, pumping out hormones intermittently and randomly. It is a WILD fckn ride for a great many women who are prescribed SSRI instead of hormones, for their hormone related issues. Hysteria? Hormones. Depression? Hormones. Weight issues? Hormones.

Good luck BALANCING those hormones, which were never static anyway, and which do a dance like crazy children with ribbons around a maypole. You’ve got your crazy kid testosterone, your crazy kid progesterone, and your crazy kid estrogen, all running around the maypole weaving their ribbons around and it can be a real mess. Mess with one and who knows how the others may respond. Get on exogenous HRT and that helps stabilize….but then who knows when your body decides to randomly pump out endogenous hormones in a fun “JK fooled you” last ditch attempt at…who knows what.

I have to do a bit of mental gymnastics to make it make sense in my mind. Especially with the facial hair.
So correct me if I am wrong but. Estrogen tanks because your Testosterone tanks right? But if this is the case then how does a girl start growing facial hair?

And wouldn't going on testosterone make it worse? Wouldn't they benefit from going on birth control or something?

This is confusing as F**k but I really want to learn specifically for my gf who has been on birth control since she was like 13. This terrifying to me as to what the consequences are for her if she ever dare comes off.

No, estrogen tanks because our OVARIES tank.
We produce estrogen in our ovaries primarily (we also produce testosterone in our ovaries).

The addition of exogenous testosterone can absolutely increase the androgen related sides you typically see happening as we age. To say they won’t is disingenuous, and most of us women WILL minimize those sides, because we are so desperate for a better quality of life (energy, libido, brain fog, recovery) that we’ll say just about ANYthing to get and KEEP what we get wrt health care improvements like TRT/HRT. What’s a little more chin hair if I am feeling like life is in color rather than grey? If I can navigate what life throws at me without feeling like folding up and giving up? What’s a slightly enlarged clitoris if my husband can now FIND it, and if it improves the quality of our relationship in the bedroom? This is stuff that we should be able to decide for ourselves, after communicating with our partners.

A lot of us women will also keep a little quiet about that stuff because our well meaning chivalrous men want to protect us lil' ladies and don’t quite get that when you encounter our smooth legs and buttocks and faces, we aren’t MADE that way, we’re already shaving, plucking, exfoliating, and hydrating to GET that way :p

During perimenopause Progesterone is the first hormone to drop. Then after menopause estrogen (estrodial) almost completely disappears. However before that the ratio of esterone and estrodial gets skewed.

Estrogen supports soft tissues and mucous membranes. The lack of estrogen causes pain during sex, more frequent UTIs and cognitive problems.

Topical estrogen is a very safe way to restore vaginal function and reduce UTIs during perimenopause and is low risk due to less systemic estrogen.

In females the most stable hormone is testosterone, however supplementing it is not without risks of permanent virilisation (clitomegaly, hair growth, voice changes).

Also giving exogenous testosterone to a woman capable of pregnancy is risky as the foetus could experience virilisation if female even during the first few weeks.

Tldr this shit is complicated. I'm glad they have removed the warnings.
