Excessive Back Arching on Bench Press

As far as the normal gym goer. I see a lot curling their back, and personally it bugs me. Competition wise I understand. But if ur arching ur back that much to get extra lbs why not go decline? Seems a lot safer..

Do you consider push press an asshole move or a valid move? Personally I am not a fan of ass not on the bench press but it could have it's purpose, you have to still hold and pull down a heavy negative. Of course your actual 1 rm is ass on the bench, if anybody would consider his cheated bench as a 1 rm he is a moron and I am with you. Also arched back is safer mechanically because you have to pull your shoulders far down and flex your entire upper back or your arch will fall down.

I was talking about ppl doing 1-2 reps that way, getting up, and celebrating like it was an achievement. I don't personally push press but don't think it's an asshole move. My main point of this post was just trying to understand if an excessively arched back has a purpose, or was mainly just for ego lifting.

An excessively arched back does not necessarily mean ass not on the bench, some of us are just more flexible, why not use it in our favor? Press to neck is far more retarded and risky. As I said if you consider your cheated bench your 1 rm you may also consider your kip pull up a pull up. In reality all of us are ego lifters, aesthetics or numbers all of us feed on our success in a way and keep up...

Understood. And as stated in my original post, I was talking about ass off as well. I could have clarified this better. I agree, in a sense that everyone is an ego lifter. I don't agree with cheating and considering that a real max or a real set though. To me, that makes you an asshole. My persomal opinion

@Perrin Aybara any reccomendations? Always looking to progress in this journey

I'd think you're advanced enough to jump into an intermediate program. I think RTS would be right up your alley. Highly customizable and requires a lot of thought with planning your routine. You can usually find a PDF version of the RTS Manual online.

If it's at a meet and goes by meet rules it's a legit lift. Asshole or not you've worked the system and you'll go in the record books. Ass off the bench at the gym is not a legit lift.
