City of Grit's first go at powerlifting

Unfortunately, I work 5-5. I’ll be on this schedule for at least another year. Trying to sleep during the day is a nightmare for me—my body wants to be up with the sun. That, and my 5 year old thinks it’s play time at 7 am on the weekends. Lol
Oh, that's right. I remember you and PA talking about your job over in his thread. Damn man, thankfully I've never done permanent 12 hour shifts like that. I honestly think my body would fall apart from lack of sleep. I get really shitty sleep when I have a fucked up schedule and just feel terrible all day.

I was the exact same way when it was daylight out and found blackout curtains didn't really help too much. Taking melatonin helped slightly but every now and again I'd end up with insomnia from it. I'll never go back on midnights I hated the schedule itself. My social life was nonexistent too.

I've got an interview Monday for a night shift job and I'm really unsure about it. I can't function at all on less than 7-8 hours of sleep per day. I'm worried if I get the job I won't be able to adapt. I'm going to get more details about it Monday and think about it. Kinda wanting to at least try and if I don't like it I can always quit and find something else.

Some people do, don't, and sort of adapt to it I've found. For me the worst part was anytime I was laying there attempting to sleep, if I didn't fall asleep within the first hour or two I'd end up just laying there. Sometimes it was 3-4 hours before I'd fall asleep. The first few weeks of being on that shift I was fine and slept well but once my body semi-adapted that's when the insomnia started kicking in.

Did that for roughly two solid years working 10pm ~ 8am. Then I've had jobs where the schedule was just all over the place. Almost liked it better sleep-wise because I was actually tired and exhausted most of the time so I had no problem falling asleep.

I've found early AM I like the best though for sure. I can start whenever but typically start around 3-330am and am home by 11-12 sometimes sooner depending on how much I want to hustle. I fucking love it.

I'm used to first shift, like starting around 7am and finishing no later than 3-4pm and that's what I prefer. That's what my fiancee works as well. I've done some evenings over the year, but still followed the same sleep schedule. That's really what I'm worried about is just being completely unable to adapt and not sleeping.

Besides her work schedule there's nothing keeping me from going completely over to nights. I could black out my windows and turn my phone off and sleep undisturbed.

I've been weighing pros and cons and pretty much coming up even, so having trouble deciding if it's worth it or just hold off for a day shift job.

Is this job higher pay? Better atmosphere / work conditions?

I found when working 10pm~8am my social life took a dive and I rarely ever saw my girlfriend (now wife) who I lived with. She was working 830-430 and I was attempting to sleep around 1-2pm ~ 9-930ish then be at work for around 10. Only saw eachother on weekends and around 8 when I would be pulling in the driveway and she'd be pulling out.

When friend or family things were happening, unless they were weekends, I wouldn't be able to do it otherwise I'd be going on literally zero sleep. Even on the weekends it was horrible for me anyway because I was already getting such shit sleep that I was always exhausted. I missed so many things over those few years lol

Not to totally just shit talk it though I know people who are on that schedule and love it but I just couldn't make it work.

I also had/have sleep apnea so that wasn't helping. I just had a pretty severe surgery done (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty + tonsils removed) in October to eliminate the need for a CPAP so my throat doesn't close as much when sleeping. It was semi-successful according to the sleep study done afterwards but I can definitely say with 100% confidence I'm getting way better sleep and I'm much more rested.

I'm also not waking up as many times throughout the night. I can remember sometimes counting and I was waking up around 20+ times in the middle of the night just constantly tossing and turning. According to the sleep study results prior to the surgery I was waking up minimum 17 times an hour and very rarely, if ever, entering REM.

Also, my RBC dropped to a much better level from getting more oxygen in at night. So that's always good lol

It is significantly higher pay and better benefits and less strenuous work. I'd be working alone with pretty much zero human interaction. Not really worried about a social life. My fiancee and I mostly stay in and watch Netflix or go on trips just the two of us every couple months. I'm mostly worried about not being able to adapt and feeling tired and shitty all the time. Honestly no amount of money within reason is worth that to me.

I guess the other conflict is my fiancee wants to move further away to get away from her family and I want to stay closer to mine. This job would be an hour away and I don't think it's far enough for her. Two or three hours would be my about my max. I do have the experience and qualifications to get a similar paying day shift job, it's just in this area there's not much in the way of opportunity.

Oh I get it for sure bro. I have wondered if a lot of my sleep issues had more to do with the undiagnosed apnea I had for years

Not that it'd be a good idea but I did consider some sort of sleep aids at the time in attempt to get me into a rhythm.

Sounds like you may be more leaning towards not heading that direction anyway and getting more distance from your future in-laws is never a bad thing haha

I'm gonna find out more about the job and see if they actually offer it to me and then decide how I feel.

No social life crew. The extent of my social life is going to the gym and saying hi to people before I start my workout.

Fucking same, lol. And talking to you guys here. Honestly I prefer it though. I only have so much mental energy to socialize with and I gotta save it for family and my fiancee.
I have always been a bit on the anti social side. The FD now emphasises the social aspect of it for a good reason. That said I am having to become way more social. Shit i like to be in bed by 7 or 8 pm and up early.

I'm actually better at being social now than I was ten years ago, but I choose to limit how much I actually am because like I said limited energy.

Thats just it, I have different priorities these days. Gym number 1, which means sleep, nutrition, and the gym, FD number 2 but this causes issue with sleep first ( meeting last night until 10pm, home to sleep until 1230am up for a fire, the home and to bed, and up at 4am to work), and the social aspect cuts into sleep and nutrition, all of which limits priority 1. Work is number 3 and must fit the first 2 priorities. Unfortunately this may affect lifestyle lol

I'm not and never really was a really social person but I'd prefer having the option because that also translates over into free time. When I was working 10 pm ~ 8 am I already felt so incredibly shitty every day and could barely ever sleep there was no way in hell I was doing anything other than go home, lift, eat and attempt to sleep. Not seeing my fiance at the time, now wife, except maybe for a few hours on the weekend for a few years in a row drove me insane
