Büchner funnel suction filter question

does anyone know how to sterilize the paper filters before use? Can you use dry heat? Does anyone use this system that could share any good and bad points or any pointers to look out for? They look really cool and cost affective to use compared to disposable filter tops.

did you ever figure it out? I'm searching the same question.

The problem is getting the inside of the funnel clean. I would imagine that washing with soap and water first then boiling the funnel right after use might work. Not really sure how to verify other than creating and auger dish using a long cotton swab to see if you can culture any spores. Otherwise wait to see if you get a rancid infection after pinning lol. I have used this funnel myself but noticed particulate in the vials so ended up using conventional methods of filtering afterwards. Would love to hear others input on this as well

The fritted glass can clean pretty well with iso like 3 times than 3 or more times with boiling distilled then bake. My question was aimed more towards the .22um filter that sits on top of fritted glass. I seen someone say to soak in ba then throw on fritted glass with vacuum on to suck down the paper filter. I seen others say there's no need on sterilizing the paper disc bc the .22 doesn't allow anything much of harm to pass.

This is true however you must be sure not to contaminate the side down on the glass. You must wet the filter once it’s placed on the glass to create a seal. If you are filtering oil based products, you must wet the paper with the same kind of oil. I called manufacturer regarding this purpose of filtration and they did bot recommend it due to inability to verify cleanliness of the funnel as you cannot visualize the entire surface.

So soaking the paper disc filter in ba is the way to go for sterilization? Would this increase the amount of ba in the solution to point of pip?

Do not soak in BA! Just use a dropper and wet it with whatever oil you are using. Like MCT, safflower or grape seed. Turn on vacuum and wet the paper until no dry spots are visible

Thanks. I had read on here to soak in BA to sterilize the filter, but if its a .22 disc filter sitting on top of a fritted glass filter, would it even matter if the disc filter is sterilized?

As long as you don’t touch the bottom side of the filter paper you are fine. The top side is filtered anyways

As long as you don’t touch the bottom side of the filter paper you are fine. The top side is filtered. Too much BA will end up in your final product if you use that to wet your paper. All you want the oil to donis to form a seal

I just did a google search and found a 2 piece funnel that disassembles so you can clean the funnel and inspect. I would imagine boiling and drying them would be sufficient and a lot more cost effective and probably faster too.
