What has the capitalistic system contributed to the advance of medicine?
Seems to me that most of the research has been funded by the NIH and prestigious universities. Big Pharma funds what they can profit by.
Please enlighten me.

Wishing that cancer were not an "industry" (ie, subject to free market rules to some extent) is about as wise as wishing that food and housing and transportation were not "industries." Good luck, Comrade. It's the old Marxist dream of removing the free market from the table in solving a problem of human need for goods and services, and then seeing what happens.

If the entire 20th century has tought the world *anything,* it's that what happens is,.things go to Hell! In China in the 60's millions of people starved literally to death during a cultural revolution where they had removed food production from being an "industry". Much the same result as when Stalin had done so 30 years before. But China learned, and when they returned food production back to being an industry, they stopped starving. Amazing.

The even more amazing thing is that while China learned something from this (apparently), much of the West is forgetting. I talked to a doctor the other day, who had grown up in mainland China, then moved to Europe (Belgium), then Canada, then finally to the US, following the availability of biomedical research dollars. He commented that of the four countries in which he'd lived, the most socialist one was Belgium. Followed by Canada. THEN mainland China, followed by the US. What a sad commentary on the world.

There's no mystery about why removal of food production from being an "industry" and control by the government causes the masses to starve. Whereas having a government regulated private industry provides large amounts of cheap food (though not necessarily the healthiest diet, since what people want is not always whats' good for them). The reason is that when food is an industry, everybody participates. They vote with their dollars, and they get the ultimate democratic solution. It isn't perfect, but like democracy itself, it's rather difficult to see how to make it much better.

Much the same thing happens in medicine. When India removed their drug making capability from being an industry 40 years ago, the very act destroyed 95% of it. India became entirely an atrophied parasite, living on the rest of the world's drug development. When it came time for India to join the world's intellectual property laws, they had to start their drug development industry all over again, from the ground up. They (and their socialized government) had killed it. But I'm not sure they learned anything there. There's something about the British that makes them think medical care should be Communist. All over the former British empire you see the remains of this disease of thought. Show me a picture of the Queen of England on some country's money at any time, and I'll show you a people who think somebody else (anybody else) should be paying for their medical research. And in India's case, complaining that the ultimate socialist medical program (the UN's WHO) isn't giving them what they WANT, on somebody else's nickel (with WHO, that would be largely the US nickel).

Exactly! Why is the Locke-ian life and property protections the ONLY aspects that peoples' can assert as inherent rights to be protected? There is no outside agent to attribute what IS and IS NOT an inherent right, we just collectively ascribe a sanctimonious place for ones that we collectively feel are important... so, why isn't, in a first world nation, universal basic human health care such a right?

Edit: Also, CensoredBoardsSuck, where do you think the diminishing returns of favoring an oligarchy over a communist society begin? I'd say serving one all powerful master is as bad as serving a million of my fellow masters.

If the 20th century has taught us anything, it is unequivocal (i'll cite sources if you like), that in all industrialized nations utilzing a free market, wealth becomes increasingly concentrated in a small percentage of the population, while the vast majority of the population incur debt to buy goods/services from those few captains of industry.

I'm not saying socialism or communism are good alternatives to capitalism, but rampant "free market" capitalism in a global economy where the political structure of one country doesn't extend beyond its borders, though its economy does, obviously isn't the best system, either.

Nuncaquite, that is the dangerous logic I am talking about.

If you start laying the foundation for public policy on "what benefits the most of us" without thinking about inherent protections for the individuals, you begin a dangerous march towards Fascism... We see this already: The Patriot Act, NSA surveillance (PRISM/XKEYSCORE/EGOTISTICALGIRAFFE), secret FISA courts, the militarization of the police force, etc.

If you start rationalizing all of the government's policies with "Well, it benefits the whole, even if it is at the extreme cost of some", one day you wake up and the attitude of the nation has become "you're a liability on society" or "you don't contribute enough to the whole to have rights".

Just think about the foundation of the American justice system: it is wholly inefficient, yet it is based on principles that we Americans are supposed to hold sacrosanct: a trial by a jury of your peers, due process of law, that one is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. Think about that last aspect... we allow child-murderers, rapists, and pedophiles to go free when we don't have sufficient technical evidence to indict or convict them, because we hold it to be true that it is better to let 9 guilty men go free, than to jail one innocent man.

Principles, guys... in a matter of principle, the extent to which it inconveniences us or costs us is irrelevant. We can choose the cheaper policy because we are assholes, but that doesn't mean we are making a just choice.

There is never going to be a "perfect" system and while socialism/communism obviously are a dead end for many reasons I think we are forced to deal with the fact that we are experiencing the inevitable negative consequences of capitalism - concentration of wealth/power. This concentration will continue unhindered until those at the top have it all and those at the bottom have nothing left....this will be followed by the collapse of society as we know it. It will take a catastrophic event to "redistribute" wealth back to the masses. All good things must come to end.....this may not be in my lifetime.....who knows.....but I don't think we can "solve" this problem.....just prolong the pain and hold off the inevitable as long as we can.

Oh come on Z you can't be that naive. You really believe the NIH funds the majority of medical research, NOT EVEN. For every drug which is a approved for therapeutic intervention AT LEAST ONE HUNDRED ARE DISCARDED and funded by BIG PHARMA.

For some reason I suspect your OK with BIG AUTO being financed in a multitude of areas from "crash science" to "environmental controls" by the Feds however.

The NIH does fund a considerable portion of health related research from drinking water to drugs.

Please maintain your well grounded objectivity, my friend.

Free market choice works well, as with democracy, when the people are informed of who their services are provided by and when they have alternatives. You can't "vote" with your business in the market place to improve goods or services when the vast majority of wealth is centralized in the hands of a few... whatever way you buy, you benefit the Task Master.

EDIT: To be fair, I'm arguing these points because I think they are the closest approximation to the nature of the economy, however, I must say that I really don't have a dog in the fight. I am, as many of you are, intelligent and I have a great job in a burgeoning field... so, I don't really give a shit if the masses starve. However, it's important to me that we don't delude ourselves by saying that the system we see ourselves in is really all that grand.

Ok, insurance companies suck. I cant stand the bastards. There needs to be a change for sure. Direct government intrusion wont make it better. Look at the mess and debt they already have made of things. Now we turn over heath care to these dickheads?

The open enrollment period for Obamacare coverage is slated to last for six months. If the first week's total were an indication of how many Americans will sign up during that time through the Obama administration's website, its final tally would reach a paltry 1.32 million.

Healthcare.gov provides enrollment services for Americans in 36 states; the remaining 14 states and the District of Columbia, which operate enrollment programs in their own exchanges, represent 33.7 per cent of the U.S. population, according to census projections.

If the state-run exchanges were to have a similar response rate for six months, the national enrollment total would be approximately 2 million.

That number is less than 29 per cent of the 7 million the Obama administration would need, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, in order to balance the new health insurance system's books and keep it from financial collapse.
