Nice points BBC, yet a summary would optimize their relevancy and effectiveness, IMO
Obviously not apples to apples in anyway but I just looked and I pay $600 per month for family health insurance/prescription drug benefit. My company contributes another $1000 per month. This is a great plan with no gatekeeper/referral needed for specialists etc. I also have minimal co-pays/deductibles.
If I plug my info into the website the Gold plan is also $1600 per month for my family but with much higher maximum OOP and deductibles. I of course would get no subsides in my income bracket but I guess if I was desperate....question really is what would I pay on the individual market prior to this and that I don't know. With my previous diagnoses of obesity, elevated LFTs, thyroid, depression/anxiety I suspect it would be much much more.
It would be wonderful if everyone had the means to absorb a multi thousand dollar lawsuit. You cant be so near sighted or addled to believe that this is even remotely possible. So again I ask why arent you all up in arms about liability car insurance? What is the difference in your mind.
Try this on for size: the real problem with Obamacare is that the greedy as sin health insurance conglomerates wernt cut out of the equation completely. Single payer is what we wanted as in the VA, which by any standard is more cost effective than for profit care.

A tax, yes and here is a little more food for thought. The penalty of $95 for the first year is a bit misleading. It is actually $95 per adult, plus half that price for each child (up to $285), or 1 percent of household income, whichever is greater.
Let's assume a family with 2 kids making $40K a year, will have a hard time affording the $165 per month for health care (almost $2000 per year out of their take home if they purchase), will pay a $285 penalty.
But wait, there's more. 1% of their income is actually $400.
Remember, it's the greater amount.
In 2015 they will watch that increase to a penalty of 2.0% of household income ($800) or $325 per adult and $162.50 per child ($975 per family), whichever is greater.
And, in 2016 it will be 2.5% of household income ($1000) or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child (up to $2,085 per family). That is not small change for a family that may be doing okay and not having to get government assistance depending on where in the country they live. Again, based on $40K.
In summary based on some preliminary numbers by 2016 if we do not have a single payer system families are almost FORCED into taking a huge chunk of their family income and purchasing insurance, since the cost of not purchasing it is about the same.
And, all of this will be administered by the IRS.

However the attitude regarding health insurance in the US MUST CHANGE.
My goodness of a family of four making 40K per year "can't afford" an approximate $200 00 monthly premium then the best recluse is to acquire finance classes and promptly review one's priorities because ONE ED visit for almost ANY complaint could approximate that cost!
Yep that's right, if little junior develops ear pain and fever, is evaluated at the local ED and diagnosed with Otitis Media or "ear infection" the fee will approximate one grand!
However if "blood work, medications such as parenteral antibiotics are given, two grand can EASILY be reached.
Nope the days of "praying I'll stay healthy" and relying on the finances of others to foot the bill IF something did happen MUSY END.
I only wish this thought was applied to other areas of our governmental "social safety net". Personal responsibility, what a novel idea, ah duh!

Really? I put up with socialized medicine at the VA and it beats the hell out of what my wife gets from the private sector pay for heath facility. You a vet kid?
You have got to do some better shopping friend! At Costco, <$3.00. At Kroeger, ~$3.00. I have never paid more than ~$3.50. Yes, I do ALL of the food shopping.

What are we to do with those that cant turn adversity into roses? The ones that dont have the will power or the family upbringing that instills confidence? Do we let them die by the side of the road to riches or do we give them a little help to better their situation?

On milk, I was referring to a brief period of time where the administration COMPLETELY lost touch. It DID hit 6 bucks. The folks that did not notice were (1 of 3); a) rich and could give a shit, b) poor and on food stamps, c) no kids/did not drink milk. IT HAPPENED..
Hasn't anyone ever stopped in the local "Food Lion" and ever noticed that the prices in stores located in poverty areas as HIGH AS SHIT.!!!???!! That's because the folks shopping there are paying with a staple known as EBT... This is the EPITOME of the wealthiesr RAPING the poor empowered by a govt who CAN NOT care as the SYSTEM only DECIDES the best chips to toss out, HOWEVER MUST let them "fall where they may"....

I've run thru A LOT of patients whom are privately insured and have worked the VA and at military hospitals.
IMO the care rendered to active duty patients is excellent, timely and generally cost effective.
However very few VA patients appreciate the red tape, delays in care, or generic only approach to medical care which is ubiquitous in the VA system.
Conversely I know of very FEW privately insured patients who would prefer the VA approach, in fact most would become absolutely livid "getting use to the system" which in all fairness is not "that bad" but far from optimal.
God forbid if we convert to a ONE TIER system, that is of course unless we are ALL a part of it, including these fucking privileged politicians!

On my final note here. The complete failure of Obama Care is to attempt to FORCE an American to do something. They would be better off making folks bring in their TV's or make them give up their jewelry (and with an appraiser on staff at the window) as payment. Now that would hurt...!

I am a vet. Been there, done that, and the military health care sucked ass. The dental was worse. But Im not sure if that would qualify for Socialized Med..
At 50 Im not quite a kid anymore. I have lived 2 life times in 50 years. Been all over the world and work all over the world. I dont have to rely on theory. Ive lived it and know where this goes. I have always searched for the truth, never could reside myself to the idea that the truth can be changed.
