Advice on what to do before hernia surgery

I just had a hernia repair on Oct 30th. Months earlier I had a big bulge on the right side of my groin but no pain. It went away on its own and by coincidence I had a routine checkup scheduled with my regular doctor the following week. I told him about it, he referred to me to a surgeon.

I met with the surgeon, who did a physical examination and determined I did have a hernia. I explained that I'm very active and intend to stay that way, and I was specific about what I like to do. We scheduled the repair.

Since I didn't have any pain, I continued my workouts, including deadlift and squat. Until one day, I lifted the weight and out of nowhere the pain hit. I put it down and did no more strength training until a few weeks ago. This pissed me off since I had only just returned to the gym after another surgery and it just seemed like karma wanted me out of the gym!

Anyhow I felt the surgery was fairly easy, although it left three big lumps in a row above my navel (robot probe entry points) and a huge bruise across my entire abdomen. Minimal post op pain and I'm back to the gym (with Dr's permission) doing well. So far I have no reason to be unhappy with the result.

Here is a little blurb from the op notes. I omitted the "technique" section since it is long and technical, but if anyone is interested I'll post it. It is kind of interesting.
