Minoxidil oral vs topic

Hi guys, my AAS supplier has added oral minoxidil to his stock. I’ve always taken it in topical form, 5%, after a hair transplant, and I never wanted to use finasteride because of the side effects. I recently found out that oral minoxidil exists — I don’t think it’s even available in my country, or at least I’ve never heard about it by chance.
I’m considering adding it to my treatment. Has anyone here already used it? Have you noticed big differences compared to the topical version?
Are there any contraindications to taking it? (I read that it lowers blood pressure, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for us).
May I ask, who is your supplier?
I am looking for raw minoxidil powder...

I have had much better results with oral minoxidil at a low dose of 2.5 mg/day. Even at that dose, it can lower BP a bit, which may be an added benefit depending on your current BP control.

I just need to trim my ear hair a little more often now :D
Are you taking this alone or are you taking it with Durastride?

How has it been working for you, if you don't mind me asking? I started 0.25mg Durastride today, and waiting for the topical minoxidil to get here..
I was on finasteride before oral minoxidil. It has been good, no side effects. I started relatively early when I noticed thinning and it seems to have held the line. I also tried topical minoxidil early on, but I did not like it. I have diffuse thinning and had to use so much minoxidil (to treat a good part of my scalp), that I was having hypotension and headaches. So I gave up on topical minoxidil. Adding oral minoxidil has been great. It has produced some improvements beyond holding the line, which I have been happy with.

Brother, thank you very much for replying back with this information. I really appreciate your feedback, and I think i'm gonna give the oral monoxidil a try over the topical. I'm just hoping that's okay to take with .5mg of durastride... Any idea? Also, i'm hearing a lot of people are only taken durastride like 3 times a week vs Every day??

The combo of Dutasteride and minoxidil has the highest proven effectiveness for hair loss prevention and recovery.

As Ghoul said, dutasteride and minoxidil are a great combination! Go for it. Dutasteride is more potent and has a longer half-life than finasteride, so 3x per week is totally fine. There are even people that recommend taking finasteride 3x per week, although I think that is largely outside of the AAS user community.

Edit: I will just add that topical minoxidil is totally fine if it works for you; it just wasn't for me. Plus, my BP was always a touch high, low 120s SP and low 80s DP, so the small drop in BP from 2.5 mg oral minoxidil has been an added benefit. I also believe there have been studies suggesting low dose minoxidil helps preserve arterial elasticity, but I don't have a reference handy at the moment.

So you don't need a prescription for 5% topical minoxidil? I thought you needed a prescription for at least the good topical minoxidil, but i'm seeing 5% minoxidil online at places like costco, is there any difference?

Difference vs what? Topical of all strengths is over the counter.

Oh, okay.Yeah, that's exactly what I meant, man. I didn't know if there was a stronger/better version that you could obtain with a prescription. However, thanks to you guys, I think i'm gonna go with the oral version of minoxidil. Along with .5mg of Durastride 3 x a week. Do you think that will be sufficient?

Also, if you don't mind me asking what is the recommended dosage for the oral minoxidil? I didn't know if the dosage could vary because i'm also on Durastride or is it the same across the board?

Again, brother, I appreciate both of your guys' feedback and help..

Start with 2.5mg / day.

You may, or may not, experience some water retention. 95% of the time this resolves after a month of steady dosages as your body rebalances, and never returns.

If you tolerate it well, which is likely, increasing to 5mg / daily* provides the maximum results achievable for hair. There is no benefit to going higher. This is still much lower than the doses used for blood pressure, and very safe, even health improving for the overwhelming majority.

Be patient. Visible results take time. Hair doesn’t grow quickly.

Don’t panic at the initial “shed”. It may appear severe. It’s actually a good sign that it’s working.

Hair cycles are GROW - STOP - DROP - REST - GROW

When starting minox and Dut/Fin they “reset” the cycles and a bunch of hairs will drop at once, rather than the usual staggered pattern. The new hair that comes in next will be higher quality than the one that dropped. Each subsequent cycle will be an improved hair (thicker, longer), until max improvement is reached at 2-5 years.

Treat this process as a long term investment. Give up at any point and all gains will quickly be lost.

*5mg once a day is fine, but split 2.5mg lessens side effects if that’s an issue. Personally I found myself forgetting the second dose so take it once a day.

Recent studies clearly show that the combination of oral minoxidil and dutasteride represents the best current treatment.

The initial dose of oral minoxidil, as the great Ghoul mentioned, is usually 2.5 mg, and it's recommended to stay on this dose for 3-4 months to see how your body reacts. The most frequent side effects are water retention and increased body hair growth. If your body tolerates it well, the most effective dose is 5 mg daily. Taking higher doses is generally not recommended due to the balance between side effects and benefits.

A first check-up can be done after 6 months; at this point, changes should already be noticeable. Improvement continues from then until 2 years.

Initial shedding is perfectly normal and even beneficial; the final result will be even better.

Regarding dutasteride, the ideal dose is 0.5 mg daily if there are no side effects. Dutasteride is much more effective than finasteride because it targets DHT through two pathways.

In short, anyone concerned about their hair health can benefit from this combination of medications, which is effective, quite safe, and currently the best treatment available. As always, it's advisable to consult a good dermatologist for evaluation and a prescription. It's a decision you'll be glad you made.
