Blood Pressure

Damn dude I’ve never had edema this bad, literally came out of nowhere

Shit's poison. What they don't tell you is that over the long term, if you don't already have edema, if keeps stretching blood vessels until they leak and you can develop it as a result of Amlodipine. And this is the "gold standard", first line CCB in the US.

Not hazardous to your health but a real quality of life reducer.

Like @Mastedon said, Cilnidipine is the way to go. In India they prescribe Amlodipine until you get edema, then switch to Cilnidipine, saving a couple cents per pill by staying on cheaper Amlodipine. Better to start with it to begin with and avoid edema altogether.

Appreciate the info man, I just realized when I put in my Indian pharma order I got amlodipine and clinidipine mixed up, knew I should have came back and read this thread again before placing my order. I will be stocking up before the 28th lol

I'm seeing the headlines now....

"Democrats (ok..fine...sorry for making it political....both sides suck) distraught about sudden epidemic of Cilnidipine in our urban and suburban neighborhoods.... introducing BIG UGLY BILL to improve access to Amlodipine (and weed)!"

(K... although I'm not a fan, I don't have anything against weed in moderation...lol... that's not part of the headline).

He just had a major price drop in Cilnidipine I think, so may have worked to your favor.

I threw out 1200 Telm/Amlodipine tabs after discovering it's long term edema inducing properties and found Cilnidipine,

It would be swell to believe an accessible alternative will ever arrive in the USA...but I don't see anything better hitting the generic market in the next decade.

You monster! You coulda donated those to "Pills for pill heads!" (Or some other worthy organization...."Telma-Heal for toddlers"?)

I really hated wasting it. But then, if I gave them to someone, I'd have to include compression socks....

I’m a hypochondriac, can the edema cause DVT or would it have to be pre existing? Swelling is even worse today, my right leg is more swollen compared to the left and I’m just wondering at what point should I get it checked out?

It's superficial, no added risk of clots.

If it's not fully resolved 3 weeks after stopping it could be a sign you "unmasked" edema being caused by something more serious.

Had an absolute nightmare on amlodipine.

Huge amount of water retention in my feet and legs. The aching kept me awake most nights. Really messed up my training too. It did lower my BP though.

Best alternative CCB that won't give me these sides?

Already running telm 40 and nebivolol 2.5
How long after dropping the amlodipine did your side effects go away ? I only took 5mg for 3 days and the edema I have right now is insane. Today will be day 3 , the edema flared up Friday and has added 2.5 inches to my calves and I can barely get my shoes on because my feet are so swollen. When I first wake up after elevating my feet at night everything looks pretty normal but as the day goes on my legs and feet just balloon up. No pain but my feet sometimes feel like they’re cramping.

Did you have edema previously? It can take up to 3 weeks to clear after stopping amlodipine from what I've read, but should be sooner.

Developing it that quickly, just 3 doses means you're very sensitive.

That said, if you decide to try Cilnidipine, in studies of patients who developed edema on amlodipine, between 97%-100% get complete resolution after they switch. I was actually surprised it had that high of a success rate in stopping edema.

Remember, for the same BP reduction. you need 2x the dose of Cilnidipine, so 10mg.

I’ve never had any previous edema, the evening after I took the 3rd dose I noticed my ankles were slightly swollen so I decided to stop taking it. The next day I didn’t really think about it until I got home from work and started taking off my shoes, that’s when I noticed my ankles had doubled in size and I could barely get my shoes off. My systolic blood pressure has been elevated but my diastolic is always in range so I thought adding in a calcium channel blocker (I meant to order clinidipine , I just got them mixed up) would help with the elevated systolic. I already take 80mg of telmisartan and 5mg of nebivilol daily and my plan was to add in a low dose of a CCB so I can lower the telmisartan dose. Thank you for the reply , I’ve been reading as much as I can on blood pressure and this thread has a ton of good info. I’m 28 and have a family history of high blood pressure, even when I’m not on cycle I take 5mg of nebivilol from my dr to keep things in range, I just know high blood pressure will destroy your kidneys and I don’t want to run into any problems down the road.

You are definately doing the right thing, and it seems like this effect is entirely from Amlodipine.

Even though the risk is tiny, I suggest starting with half the 10mg pill for a week to make sure Ciln working well for you before going to 10mg,

The whole thinking around when cardiovascular protection should begin, among the world's preventative cardiologists, is changing. The belief is starting much earlier, even 18, to prevent as
much cumulative damage as possible is the best approach. In part due to safe meds, and the fact that maintaining a system that's still in very good condition is far easier and has better outcomes than dealing with a lifetime of damage after it's happened, the way it is being done now.

You can escape your genetic fate.

Thank you for all the info , I’ll be starting with 5mg and seeing how that goes
