Just moved to a new city and can’t have packages delivered to my apartment. Does anyone have experience with using a PO Box?

I have several never had an issue. Big packages are put in larger lockers and a key to it is placed in your box.

Do I just go to the post office and tell them I need a PO Box or would it be at a different place? And would it be ok to order my gear to it or just regular packages like Amazon?

Grease it with legitimate and semi legitimate packages first. Bring two forms of ID.

You can get a PO box anywhere you want.
Choose one with better hours. Avoid those that close early etc, limited hours.

Box size does not matter, if it cant fit they will keep packages for you in the back, but you need to queue to pick it up. Pick the smallest box.

In general UPS etc is better than USPS.
Queues are shorter, service better, they move quicker, less shit gets lost.
When shipping, you need a street address, most couriers do not ship to PO boxes. When signing up, ask for street addressing for your box.

I travel a lot for work so just always get my gear sent to my hotel because I'm usually there for 4-8 weeks but if I were home when I ordered I'd ship it to my PO box like any normal package.

I’m gonna look into opening a PO Box tomorrow. There’s a post office close to my apartment

Add an extra 1-2 business days for them to sort out the packages they receive etc for every item you receive that wont fit into the PO box for USPS.
