One of my cousins has worked in oil and gas since age 17 and he did a stint in SA for 3 years. All the western oil people live in ‘compounds’ which are like gated communities essentially, isolating them from the broader local community. Little weird, but it sure looked nice from his pics.

I have no idea about gear but SA would be about the last place I would want to be caught up with anything illegal

I certainly wouldn't.
I know someone who went to live in UAE for a while and was told they needed to provide prescription for medications brought into the country.
And they did check his luggage and he was prepared for it.
But it was nothing illegal or banned in the country, in any case.

Needless to say, steroids are prohibited substances, there.
You really do not want to mess around with stuff like this.
From what I understand, even trt with a prescription would land you in trouble.
Zero tolerance on rule breaking and what they deem illegal items/drugs entering their country.

Yea I’ve been in oil & gas for 5 years now and this will my first time going international and just wanted to know, I’m just gonna cycle off and be on the safe side

Be a respectful guest, or forget about it I have known friends who have worked in the middle east and made good money, but don't do anything that could become a problem

Some countries want their rules to be obeyed, full stop.
Often that doesn't quite happen in the West, lol.
But let's not get into that...

People who have had trouble in that part of the world (some literally ending up in jail the minute they landed there) is usually to do with them not finding out exactly what the law says and what is allowed or not.
It's unfortunate, but it is known these are countries that are structured and operate in a very different way.
One has to take responsibility for their own safety.

Thank you for the reply.

This is correct. I did some training in SA when I was in the Marines and got to see how American families in that industry were living. At that time (they've loosened the laws for non-Muslims) but families over there had to keep your alcohol consumption hidden and smuggled in. It was kind of a game they had to play.

This is why people looking to either visit or work in a country should be doing their homework. If you're taking any prescription drugs it's wise to check whether if it's banned in that country and in that case there should be an alternate prescription that's acceptable. Better safe than sorry as it's better to learn about and follow the rules and laws of that country as you are a guest in their land and they expect strict compliance like we here in the USA likewise do!
