Question about liking posts.

I used to be able to like and/or react to posts outside of steroid underground but it seems like it has been completely removed for myself. Does anyone know why this could be? Sorry for tagging you but since you’re a mod I figured I‘d go ahead and ask you as well. Sorry for the bother. Thanks for your assistance. @Millard

The reaction system was being abused by some newer members. It has been temporarily disabled for all newer members while we figure it out.

The 'well-known members' as well (?)

imo its used to not repeat a recent post but when it comes to a conspiracy its different imo. i see more of them liking each their own post between well-known = well-known. rarely well-known to member & !new member.. (i concur thats fine but not unlimited (!~) should be limited).

should be limited for all user [insert time-frame(?)] imo @Millard

Eg; user can give 'x' per [time frame]

gives incentive for quality posting (?)

It shoud not quantify either. time on the 'x' axis (/reset) makes more sense per user imo.

...Ah. I just posted in a different thread that I had tried to use reactions on something outside of SU, and the option wasn't there for me. So this answers that question.

Also, I'm seeing it as of today, so I'm assuming that you've worked the bugs out of it being abused?

I just had the same question. Liking post os a great thing to highlight the best post and to know what posts from me people like. Hope that everything is going to be alright soon

That's not a conspiracy. That's normal social behavior.

If a member is well-known for history of relative quality contribution, they will tend to receive more likes. Similarly, members who have been around a long time are more likely to recognize those contributors, more likely to read their posts, and more likely to react.

This is not to say this is not inherent with numerous unconscious and conscious biases. It is. But not a conspiracy.

The quality contributions of well-known members are more likely to be recognized. So new members will likely need to make a greater number of quality contributions to receive the recognition they deserve.

There are several things that can be done but I need to do more research on what meaningful impact tweaking different variables e.g. ratios, limits, time restrictions, etc. will have.

In the end, the reaction system will always have shortcomings.

My immediate concern is how some new members are abusing it just to obtain posting privileges in the Steroid Underground subforum.

It would seem like simply continuing to make quality contributions would be the obvious and straightforward way to go for new members.

Unfortunately, a few spend far more time trying to bypass this requirement.

With regards to reaction system for example, there have been instances of new members "liking" thousands of posts per week exploiting the social norm of reciprocity.

There are other (mis)uses not restricted to new members that can be problematic too.

Huh. I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue. On Facebook, for instance, I know the real people in real life, so the social reciprocity makes sense. But here, people are just their comments and avatars, so I don't personally see any reason to give people positive feedback unless they say something that I see real value in.

It's just a little alien to me. When I get followed on IG by an account I'm 99% sure is a bot, someone I don't know and don't see interesting content from (e.g., typical thirst accounts), I just ignore it. Following it back encourages further bad behaviour, and makes the IG cesspit even worse.

Anyway, thanks for your hard work on keeping shit clean and functional here.

I couldn't have said this better myself. This is a message I hope ALL members take seriously.
