Earning your way into bodybuilding

When I was coming up there was little gear around and nobody would talk about anything to you unless you earned ur way to gaining respectable size. If someone who was big gave you sone advice you took it as the gospel and didnt sit there questioning them. If they wanted to work in with you you let them, you didn't sit there on your phone and tell them "I have 6 more sets." If someone at the gym had beef you settled it outside, and it often wasn't pretty. So why are guys on all this gear and can't gain size? Well, it's because they never earned their way in and put in actual work, when the going got tough they bitched out. I miss the days of the old gyms and earning your way into the Underground. guys respected each other because they knew that that other guy was going through hell to make gains. They respected hard work, they wanted to see their gym buddies make progress. This is one aspect of powerlifting and strongman I respect, it never left those circles. But bodybuilding? Shit man...those days are long gone. I sure do miss em

I haven't been in the gym scene long enough or socially involved enough to have experienced what you're talking about in the gym, but the earned respect thing I totally get and there's nothing like it. It tends to be a thing of the past no matter what aspect of it you can think of.

When I graduated recon school and got deployed I had my training which was intense, and my spurs which I earned in recon school, but in my unit overseas I was nobody and nobody gave two shits who I thought I was either. After a month or so and a few good firefights where shit got heavy, they took me in and I was like the closest family imaginable. It was earned though, the hard way.

I get what you mean bro, sucks that it's a less common thing anymore

Kind of like when you hear..."I have been lifting for two years and knew it was time to take it to the next level with gear!" Always makes me laugh.

Trained natty for 10 years. Most of that time inside the walls. I built a great foundation. I learned gym etiquette. I took advice from the big Dawgs. Cell phones were not to common in prison, however, if you pass gas and don't make a valid attempt to hit the head or go outside... Often times it ended bad... I've always felt like I belong in the gym. Even if I'm just spotting and changing weight for a homeboy. Some of these new jacks get me fired up. Rude. Disrespectful. Doing crunches in the squat rack. Doing half reps. And that one guy.... CHARMS McGEE.. That guy who does chest and arms 9 days a week. Best believe I entered every lifting competition in that motherfucker.

Honestly, if a guy hasnt been lifting for at least ten years well you know the just aren't on the same level. There are some truly devoted people that have made great progress in for five years I'll give them credit for that

I think it depends your gym... One of the gyms I go to is exactly like you explained the old school gyms. It's dirty, rough almost rustic feeling! You have to pay your dues to be part of the group! Everyone helps each other and there's always competition to out due the next guy. Things have gotten ugly quite a few times. It's a place where you would go watch your buddies train and talk shit even on your off days!

That's bullshit! I've only been training for 4 years and I out work a lot of guys that have been doing for 15+ years. If it's your passion and you constantly study the science of building muscle and nutrition and you really wrap your head around what it takes to actually do the shit right I think you earned your stripes!

@benchyourmom , you pretty much just proved @Demondosage point.
Rather than acknowledging you really haven't had the years of experience, work, pain, injuries, and spent money you start whinning about how you really deserve the respect you think you deserve.

Way to be the stereotype buddy. Good job!!

If you're hanging out at your gym with your buddies on your off days...it might be time to consider maybe a girlfriend??

Dont be made because you made yourself look stupid. Just finish putting everyone else to shame with your super duper lifting technique then return to your gym shower session with your buddys!
