Most people I have known over the last 35 years in the sport were oblivious to what chances they had to be great at the sport they worked hard every day for. I call this living the dream and totally ignoring reality.

This thread is only for the drug users or future drug users.

I think genetics is bullshit. I was a tiny skinny shit when I was 20. Now I am much bigger. Thats why roids are made to go beyond your genetics. So there is no factor with them when you can change some of their makeup or the makeup of which they make you. If you are genetic to being fat you can diet and get skinny. GENETICS IS A POUR EXCUSE TO BE OK WITH YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Genetics are not bullshit.... They are what separate the elite from everyone else. Sure, hard work plays a big part... But genetics are the great decider of one's ultimate ability.

I'll leave this here:

Now I'm going to bounce out of this thread... Don't want to give the troll anymore attention than he already gets.

Genetics are actually king... trump all

That's pretty debatable Doc...

I 90% sure he's master.on.... If not, I'm still 100% sure OP is a troll.

He said genetics trumps all. Are you saying someone with great genetics who doesn't lift will be the next Malanichev or Coleman?

I think it's a little extreme to assume "they" wouldn't lift at all though, don't you? I wasn't really saying that exactly, no.

But, to your point, if we consider a genetic condition like kids born with a myostatin deficiency... many of them could go through life never touching a dumbbell and look better then half the guys you'll see at a gym. On the strength side of things, many early strongmen didn't even train. They just ate. My old avi, Louis Cyr, he fascinated me because not only did he not take steroids but he was known to have not even trained... Training wasn't really well understood back then either. He ate like a bull and performed. I truly believe there are guys today with lesser genetics that could use all of our modern training and diet principals and still not achieve some of his feats of strength.

Genetics are what create a Ronnie Coleman and an Andrey Malanichev... I could train and eat and pump gear into myself until the cows come home but I will not achieve anything in the same universe as Ronnie Coleman. Why? Because his genetics trump mine. That doesn't mean I can't achieve great things by working hard though and the same goes for someone with horrible genetics.. but those with the superior genetics are always going to be ahead.

Yeah, to save me some time.. basically whAt he said, @Docd187123

But you went to the opposite extreme with myostatin deficiency lol :p

Very true and that's bc we know most people don't train/diet properly. But, take a guy with poor to mediocre genetics who trains religiously and properly compared to someone with the myostatin deficiency who never lifts......

On the strength side of things, many early strongmen didn't even train. They just ate. My old avi, Louis Cyr, he fascinated me because not only did he not take steroids but he was known to have not even trained...

He may not have trained as you and I think I training but he was a logger before beginning his strongman career. It's like the story of Milo and the bull

Training wasn't really well understood back then either. He ate like a bull and performed.

But it is understood now so it's become more important and makes muh more of a difference than in the days of Cyr.

[quite]I truly believe there are guys today with lesser genetics that could use all of our modern training and diet principals and still not achieve some of his feats of strength.[/quote]

If you take your average guy sure maybe but if you take someone with similar stature to Cyr, I think you'll find they can come very close and even surpass him.

True to a degree. I think genetics will make or break you once you've gotten to the elite level of sports. That old saying it takes 10,000 hours to master a sport holds true here. The best or the best are built genetically to be on top but they never would have been able to get close to their potential had they not trained and practiced. Malanichev was always a strong guy but there's no way he would have squatted 1000lbs on genetics alone and neither did his genetics play the largest role in that.

I had to match your argument somehow... You forced me! :)

Very true, however I still think my argument holds true here... I could point to the fact that he did unbelievable things before he was a logger but honestly, they might be more legend than fact. You mentioned his frame and stature, doesn't that fall back on genetics? To have someone with similar stature, frame etc and compare his abilities to Cyr is almost like saying, "let's get someone with similar genetics to compare the two of them." Now, if I said said let's take an average guy (IE a guy with average genetics) and replicated everything about Cyr or Andrey or Coleman's diet and training Etc... Would you believe the average guy would come out close at all? Does that not sound like genetics were the deciding factor?

Malanichev was always a strong guy but there's no way he would have squatted 1000lbs on genetics alone and neither did his genetics play the largest role in that

Certainly not, Andrey trained his big ass off. He wasn't great JUST because of his genetics. Genetics and strength go less hand in hand then muscle building IMO. I sincerely doubt I'll achieve a 1000 pound squat even if I do everything Andrey did... Because my genetics are simply not in line with his. Maybe I'll squat 950 though... :)

I don't think anyone is assuming that someone with great genetics doesn't still have to work hard.... They just have an advantage. But, that doesn't mean short people can't play basketball too.

Genetics absolutely are king
The spectrum is as wide as the day is long
And i hold the idea that if you truly have great genetics it wont be hard to gain, build, shape or lose fat.

It took Phil Heath 8 yrs from beginning as an untrained BB to being Mr. Olympia. You line up 1,000,000 men and NONE of them will match that size, shape or symmetry in that short of a period of time or triple that amount of time. Maybe a small handful will come close. Thats what makes averages.

No different than Lebron is to playing basketball or Peyton is to quarterbacking. Just cuz your 6'8 dont make you Lebron or just because you know how to throw a spiral makes you Peyton Manning. Yes, all can improve but very very very few will ever match or even come close

Genetics are king

Loggers, good grief they're strong. Plenty of those in my family tree - vise grips, no joke. And old-school farm workers, another group of brute force.

Few people in the west acquire that kind of Duracell strength - those guys can go all day under serious loads, and then rinse and repeat the next day. Most, if not all, of us are total pussies in comparison - big as some undoubtedly are, I bet they can't keep up with loggers for more than an hour.
