what you eat can influence how you sleep

Like you said, I've also noticed that chronic sleep loss (sleeping less than 5 hours per night consistently) leads to bad dietary choices. I start to eat a lot of donuts/fast food if I'm sleep deprived, when I otherwise eat pretty well. I wonder what the biology is behind this.

Sleep deprivation is a stressor that saps the recovery systems of your body whereas eating delicious calorific fatty and sugary foods does the opposite and mentally makes you feel good for doing it while storing crucial calories for the stressful times

Well this probably isn't the scientific explanation, I'm no doctor, but I would imagine it's just laziness for lack of a better word. I mean, who wants to spend time cooking something healthy and nutritious when you're exhausted?

I see your point, that's definitely true. But I think also, if you offered someone donuts and a cheeseburger on one platter and a grilled chicken salad on another platter (both premade), that the sleep deprived subject would be more likely to pick the unhealthy food.

Quite possibly, they don't call it "comfort food" for nothing haha. Makes you feel better when you're eating it, and like total shit later when you think about the fact that you downed two double cheeseburgers and a half dozen donuts hahaha
