Filtration questions

When using a filter like theses how do you get the filtered oil out of the bottom? I know that it screws off,but once it's unscrewed is the top just open? Couldn't contaminants just fall back in? Or is there some sort of membrane on the top that you use a needle to draw out through? Thanksimage.jpg

Once you unscrew it, it's just open. I use a 20 ml syringe to draw out the oil and put in a sterile vile. The BA should take care of the contaminants that are in the oil. I've never had any problems using this method.

Thanks brother. I Think I'm going to go this route. Those fucking syringe filters are murder on your hands. Is there any certain brand you prefer?

Yeah I only use syringe filters when I'm making a small batch, like less than 50 mls. Even then I use a chock gun. Trust me though the bottle top filters will make it a lot easier. If you got the cash for a vacuum pump it's even better.

The nalgene are good, I've had problems with the millpore brand before. I honestly don't know if it was the filters or powder. They still worked out ok for 100ml batches.

If your going to do things rite.
Get the rite stuff off the rip will save you in the long run.
Couple of theses dudes that have wasted time filtering and mixing.
Will tell you get the goods.

So newbie question.

The pump helps draw the oil through the filter?

What's the alternative with no pump? Gravity lol

Gravity won't do it. The membrane in the filter is so small you could leave it there for hours and you'd lucky to get a few drops that went through if anything.

Go with the Zap cap with the glass bottom and a Mytivac pump. This set up is worth the money. Also, use a 22 micron filter. It take patience, but is worth it.
The top just sits on the glass, but once you build pressure with the pump, it seals very well.

With a 22 micron, it is a slow process. You will pump, come back later, and pump again.

Always sterilize and use new sterile surgical gloves, every time you pump. You cannot be too clean.

Eventually, the top will be close to empty, w/ only a very small amount of oil left. Pump it up again and go to bed. By morning it should be 99.9% done.

This advice is for larger amounts, say 500 ml.

I am picking the number 5....I will explain why later.

I made a special stand that holds a whatman above vial. It's simple yet effective. I can just use the weight of my arm. Instead of beating up my thumbs and hands. I should patent the thing, but I prob won't. I've seen specialized machines that basically do the same thing horizontally and r computerized, but it was $300.
