The thought of the people jumping from the towers or the fireman rushing up the stairs haunts me as it should us all!

Yes there would be collateral damage for sure innocent lives would be lost there as were here. More there than here. However I would have liked to see the Taliban utterly anilalated without endangering the lives of a large force of our men and women. That's funny, no I don't think I would because I don't want to police the world just viciously attack any country who attacks us or holds the attackers. I don't believe the Taliban was as willing to give up al-qaida as you make out. They knew what osama was doing from their country and if they didn't which I don't believe for a second then they should have. First of all, the US did not lose the war in Viet Nam. We simply chose to withdraw. There is a difference. The US won nearly every engagement, but the North's strategy was to wage a war of attrition. No matter how many casualties, the North would continue to send more troops.
After realizing , their strategy, the US facing growing discontent for the deaths of their sons in battle, decided to pull out. It's not as simple as that, but the fact is for every soldier or Marine KIA there was 10-15 NVA killed. We were not willing to sacrifice more American lives until every NVA was dead.
Granted the massive air strikes of the North were successful, but they were limited in their scope. If we had conducted more massive bombings over the entire country, it may have made a difference, but to what expense. There is a difference between war and genocide.
The point is, we did not lose the war, we chose to leave and we should have never been there in the first place. Same is true for Iraq and Afganistan.
My viewpoint is one from someone who made a living off war for nearly 50 years. The US Military is the greatest, most poweful war machine in the history of time, so pardon my sensitivity to your blanket statement. We, the military did not lose the war. We, the government did, from the beginning.

I am a realist you can't go to war and not have collateral damage they attacked us first and weren't to worried about our women and children. I am not going to worry about the collateral damage, it sucks that women and children will die. .I'd rather them die than risk our boys in a drawn out war such as we've had.

We wouldn't have been victorious without the bombing, we had to soften up Germany before going in. Killed a lot of women and children in those bombing raids now didn't we? Same in Japan they would have kept on fighting till the last man without nukes we would have probably lost another 100,000 men maybe more killed tons of women and children with those bombs worth it? The Taliban doesn't control all of Afghanistan there were lots of tribal areas allied with us early on . Yes it's a daunting task agreed . But I believe our military would have been up to the challenge.
