Afghanistan war is over?

Apparently the war in Afghanistan ended today? I hadn't heard anything about this until now, it seems pretty sudden.

"The longest war in American history came to an end Sunday.

In a ceremony at their headquarters in Kabul, the United States and NATO brought the combat phase of their mission in Afghanistan to a close.

"Today marks an end of an era, and the beginning of a new one," said U.S. Army General John Campbell, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). "Today, NATO completes its combat mission, a 13-year endeavor filled with significant achievements and branded by tremendous sacrifice."

Beginning less than a month after the Sept. 11th attacks with air strikes against terrorist and Taliban targets in Afghanistan, the U.S. presence in the country would grow to a peak of 100,000 troops on the ground in 2010. Nearly 20,000 Americans would be wounded, and more than 2,200 killed.

As the ISAF flag was ceremonially cased and the flag for the new mission, "Resolute Support," opened, 10,600 U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan.

"We'll continue to train, advise, and assist the ANSF and Afghan Security Institutions at the operational and strategic-levels so that they can sustain their hard-fought gains and win the war," Campbell said. "'Resolute Support' will serve as the bedrock of our enduring partnership with Afghanistan."

For the most part, U.S. forces will remain at a handful of bases in Afghanistan to conduct the specialized training. Current plans call for U.S. troop numbers to be reduced by half by the end of next year.

By the end of 2016, the expectation is that the only U.S. military presence in Afghanistan will be at the embassy in Kabul.

"These past 13 years have tested our nation and our military," President Obama said in a statement. "But compared to the nearly 180,000 American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan when I took office, we now have fewer than 15,000 in those countries. Some 90 percent of our troops are home."

The U.S. will also continue to provide Afghan troops with combat air support if they should come under attack from Taliban fighters. Though the majority of U.S. troops will serve as trainers, about 1,000 of them will be special operations forces capable of carrying out counter-terrorism missions against the Taliban if they pose a direct threat to U.S. and Afghan forces.

Over the last two years, American and NATO troops have been in a support role as Afghan troops took the lead for providing security inside Afghanistan. American troops mostly remained on their bases as Afghan troops patrolled the countryside and urban areas.

While Afghan troops and police have held their own against Taliban fighters, they have also sustained significantly high fatality rates that senior U.S. commanders have labeled "not sustainable." More than 9,000 Afghan troops and policemen have been killed fighting the Taliban over the last two years, more than four times the number of U.S. military killed in 13 years of fighting in Afghanistan.

The United Nations last week projected that civilian casualties would reach 10,000 in 2014.

It remains to be seen what the reduced U.S. troop presence will mean for maintaining security. Already, in rural areas like northern Helmand Province, Taliban fighters have retaken territory from Afghan troops where the U.S. once had a size-able troop presence.

What does everyone think about this?

Yes, the sacrifice, the families. It was another waste. A waste of what? Money? lives? When has it not been a waste? What would everybody liked to have seen in this particular "war"? Forget Obama. We have such short memories. It's pathetic.

We should have blown them back to the stone age. We handicap our military because we are so afraid of being labeled the bad guys it's a real shame! I'm so sick of the political correctness and the sending our guys to die with bullshit rules of engagement. Obama is a fkn pos scumbag. He actually had our soldiers disarm in a war zone because they were meeting with Afghan who we're disarmed that's some fucked up shit. He threw away any chance for our victory to mean anything in Iraq and he's doing it again here. He left our people to die in bengazi he cares absolutely nothing about our military or their sacrifices.

Maybe it's because I don't watch the news or follow anything really, but I honestly don't even know what the war was about, aside from the 9/11 attacks.

It's a real shame. So many brave soldiers lost their lives over there.

Prevent Taliban infiltration for the most part was the concept of aid in Afghanistan. And help aid the rise of a democratic government in the middle east. Ofcourse with all the underlying intentions never mentioned !

I don't think my post was made clear, my mistake. But I meant a waste of leaving now. Much like iraq. Too early only justifying waste of our entry in the first place.

I'm assuming that the first two sentences in your post was with tongue in cheek.:)

The stone age is about where we found them. Since Alexander the Great every government that tried to change that has eventually left in disgrace. The US should have declared victory and bugged out 10 years ago.

I agree with you we should have never stayed there for a protracted war. What I meant was we should have bombed the fuck out of them , never putting a large ground forces in theater. Only small special forces teams and cia to work with native allies and guide munitions in.

Not sure there was ever anything there worth bombing. Weddings and birthday parties are what mostly made the news. There sure were never any strategic assets worth the cost of one 2000lb bomb, much less hundreds.

The original excuse for going in there was OBL, but the Taliban had already agreed to hand him over. The only sticking point was that the US wanted him for 9/11 and had zero evidence he had anything to do with it, and the Taliban government wanted evidence. We DID have overwhelming evidence he was involved in the USS Cole bombing, and that would been more than enough for extradition.

There is plenty of evidence that Osama and his alqal-Qaida terrorist network planned and executed the 911 attacks from Afghanistan further more the Taliban are a bunch of women abusing scumbags and the world and Afghanistan is better off without them so I believe nuking that fucking shithole is justified however I know that we wouldn't ever do that so I'd settle for carpet bombing every inch of Taliban and al-Qaeda territory with daisy cutters. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

There was no evidence at the time of the invasion. How many women do you think a nuke would take out? And what do you think the oil producing countries would think about that, to say nothing of Western and Asian countries that would end all trade with the US hours after the first detonation?

The Taliban didn't attack us, we attacked them. And they were willing to hand over the people we believed did attack us. The invasion actually facilitated their escape.
