Why oats?

Why do so many bodybuilders insist on eating oats? I don’t see any specific argument that makes oats king, yet almost everyone includes them in their diets.

Their glycemic index isn’t anything crazy at 53. Fruit or even fat free milk has much lower index. Many other complex carbs aren’t that far off. They’re not that macro dense nor super filling. I guess maybe using them for the slight lowering cholesterol effect? Micronutrient or mineral reasons?

I just think oats in any version are so average or below average in taste but don’t have any special features. Yet everyone uses them.

Best argument I can think of is “Ronnie ate oats every day”

Would love your takes.

For me it's just a cheap easy carb. I usually add protien powder, flax, chia, hemp seed blend, and fruit if I need the extra carbs. I just like keeping diet the same, it's so much easier to track.

There’s nothing special about it that makes it better than anything else. But it’s the go to for many people because it’s affordable, can taste delicious and can be used in many different ways. I blend mine to make oat flower then make a shake out of it

Thanks for the help y’all! Yeah they taste like garbage to me even if they’re flavored up. I never have the problem of hitting my carb macros, always hungry. Blessing and a curse.

Oats make me feel good… if i eat other carbs in the am i feel like garbage…never truly seen it “lower my cholesterol “ but no food truly has unless im eating apples, chicken and rice only for my entire diet daily for weeks on end

Cream of wheat is good but has iron…. Makes my bloods a bit off….

have u noticed that when u get oats to the perfect consistency and then add whey protein they become too watery i now have my protein as a shake on the side instead.

Nope i add dry oats to my shake and let it sit over night and drink it that way… if i add protein powder to oats it makes it weird …

Just a carb source, nothing special about them. If you're bulking oats is going to make it that much more difficult. Hard to beat plain old rice for digestibility. I love the taste of oats but they wreck my digestion.

Cream of rice and cream of wheat usually * can cause higher iron and shows on ur blood work…

I don't put oats in my own or any clients diet unless they have it there. If it digests well, go for it. But it slows most people's digestion which IMO is a no-no, atleast in offseason. But it's cheap and easy to flavor.
I typically eat half a cup, dry, (I don't eat it dry, I measure it dry) right now. I would go up to a cup. Add a chopped up Gala Apple and some cinnamon - good for breakfast along with my eggs (three eggs over medium with 7 ounces of egg whites cooked up), and a Dave's killer bread slice of toast. Hot tea, enjoy.

When my carbs needed to push higher for bulking, I used to switch carb sources, many times doing cream of rice or something easier, for the reason Mac11wildcat wrote, above. So, I guess it just depended upon how many carbs I needed.

With the reduced calories I eat now, I enjoy oats in the morning with my eggs. I am a creature of habit.
